After contemplating what to write about for my 100th opinion I decided to write about one of my favorite places, hopefully giving a totally chilled out opinion!!!
Ever wanted to escape the rat race? Ever wanted to look out of the window and see cows, fields and a great expanse of mountains? If so I think I have just the place for you. This place is called Ty Tanglwyst Farm cottages situated near Porthcawl, South Wales. I happen to stumble across them by chance when searching the web looking for somewhere to stay whilst on business in Wales. I needed somewhere to stay for a couple of weeks and the thought of staying in a hotel for that duration would have killed me! So I went on the search for a holiday cottage.
The Cottages --------------- There are 3 cottages in all, situated on a 120 acre working dairy farm. The cottages have been superbly renovated from old farm buildings and overlook the Margam Mountains. I rented Swallow cottage for the 2 weeks, which is the smallest of the 3 cottages, sleeping 4. I can comment on all 3 cottages as being the nosey person that I am, I asked if I could see inside the other 2 as well! They are 4 star rated by the Welsh Tourist Board and one step inside you will understand why!
All the cottages are immaculate and better equipped that my house! I have never seen so many kitchen implements in my life! Each cottage comes with a microwave, full cooker, fridge (+ freezer), TV, video, and absolutely gorgeous, comfortable sofas! They are centrally heated and also have a cute wood burning stove for log fires – which must make them so cosy in the winter. Provided for guests are maps and heaps of information about what to do in the area. The owners have even thought of little touches such as tissues in the bedroom and air freshener in the bathrooms – this may not seem much, but it shows just how much they have paid attention to detail.
All the furnishings match perfectly and you can tell it isn’t cheap stuff either! Pine in the bedrooms and fitted kitchens and bathrooms. The other 2 cottages are bigger than the one I stayed in. Ivy Cottage sleeps 5, whilst the newest addition, The Granary, sleeps 8. I was amazed when I entered The Granary as it is just so spacious – with 2 bathrooms and even an indoor fountain – it was absolutely gorgeous and would make an ideal place for a family Christmas! Each cottage is provided with patio table and chairs and has the use of a barbecue. There is also a laundry room with a washer and tumble dryer.
The owners; Mr & Mrs Lougher were superb! I was given loads of information about what to see and do, any problems I had, they were more than happy to give advice! If you want to hire a video in the evening, you are welcome to borrow their card. You are free to roam the farm whilst you are there and this is what makes it so ideal for children. There are several horses, you get to see the cows being milked, feed the new born calves and walk in their nearby woods. It really is an ideal family location.
Prices ------ These may change (see website for up to date pricing), but at the time I visited July/August, the two smaller cottages were £300 a week, and The Granary £400 (I would have hired The granary had it not been fully booked, as my employer was paying anyway!). This may sound quite a lot but if you divide it between several of you, it makes for quite a cheap break, especially when you see just how perfect the cottages and location is! The price includes heating, bed linen and towels.
Location ---------- This is another aspect that made these cottages so ideal. The M4 is only 2 minutes drive away, and the cottages are situated about half way between Cardiff and Swansea. There is so much to do in the area, and needless to say I made the most of my free time! Porthcawl is a traditional seaside town and located just 5 minutes down the road – there is both a sandy and rocky coastline to suit all tastes! There’s several small shops but I would recommend Cardiff if you want to do a big shop!
Just 5 minutes down the M4 was a huge designer outlet village and cinema. This was obviously one of the best bits for me! I nearly forgot I was there to work! You have factory outlets including Nike, Reebok, The Body Shop, Thorntons (!) and M&S. There is also quite a large Sainsburys located next to the retail park.
Things to do apart from shop! ---------------------------------- Believe it or not, I did drag myself away from the shops occasionally! Ty Tanglwyst Farm is located close enough for a day trip to the Brecon Beacons (about 40 minutes away), and despite the foot and mouth outbreak, there are still many areas that you can walk through.
I visited many castles during my stay too – Castell Coch (impressive but only 200 years old) and Caerphilly (very impressive and recommended) to name two that were extremely close by. There are masses of local attractions but as I have already mentioned, there is more than enough information provided in the cottages, so if you decide to take a break there, whatever the weather, there will always be plenty to do!
Conclusion ------------- The cottages are available for week and short breaks and make the ideal location for both a romantic getaway or a family holiday. The owners go to so much effort to make you feel at home and this is what is so special about these cottages. They have an excellent website at: www.tytanglwystholidaycottages.co.uk or you can call them on 01656 740224 and ask them to send you further information. I stayed on business but I hope to return and take a proper holiday as I really felt at home throughout the 2 weeks of my stay. Superb cottages, ideal location and extremely friendly owners will make your stay extremely enjoyable.
Holiday cottages is a new section I recommended to Ciao, I hope others will benefit from this section too!
