The Metro system is a rail/tram like system with is run by a company called Nexus. The Metro service links the centre of Newcastle upto the Newcastle Airport /Whitley Bay and North Shields on the coast North of the Tyne /South Shields on the coast South of the Tyne.It also links Newcastle to Gateshead International sports stadium.
The Metro is a fairly new system and was opened in 1980.The system is made up of sereval interconnecting lines, so make sure you get the right train. The trains run with a name of the destination at the top of the tram with a colour which shows which line you are on.Tickets should be bought before boarding the train from ticket machines whcih only take coins, otherwise you will be hit for a £10 fine.I will warn people to watch when collecting tickets from the bottom of the machines, as it is common for people to put things in the trays with arenot pleasant...trust me...so check before putting money in.
The Metro system is a popular and quick way for people to travel around Tyneside.I would recommend to stay clear of rush hours on a weekday, when overcrowding is a big problem.Vandalism is also a problem for the Metrosystem, and if the metro aint running they run a replacement bus service whcih even I have problems understanding.I find the replacement bus service unrealiable, confusing and a right pain in the rear generally.
The system opeates a service every 10 minutes from Newcasle upto the end of the route in Newcastle Airport.Journey time is under 40 minutes and the station at the airport is no more than 2 minutes away from the termainl building. If your running late go to the front of the train and this will give you the shortest walk.
I will point out that the Metro is not connected to Europes largest shopping centre "The Metrocentre".You should catch a train from Newcastle central station whcih run every 15 minutes during the day.

I laughed when I read the bit about people leaving things in the ticket tray. At Kingston Park station I once found a load of maggots had been placed there!

This was a fascinating opinion. I've never been up to Tyne and Wear so I've never tried the Metro, but I use the London Underground frequently so it's interesting to compare it with another system. Very insightful and analytical -- thanks!
