UCI vs. Warner vs. Odeon
Advantages Great cinema in theory
Disadvantages Prices for everything - steep
Now let’s not nitpick and say the UCI is part of the Metrocentre, which is part of Gateshead. Everyone from outside of the North East thinks it is in Newcastle, so let’s not split hairs. The UCI is possibly my most unfrequented cinema out of the three, due to its elevated prices, insipid food and, this sounds odd, ghastly smell. I always think that this cinema, found near McDonalds in the Yellow Quadrant, smells odd. Not really the best basis to base a review on but it’s true.
Because the UCI is a big cinema company, it pulls in both the latest movies and the biggest crowds. You’re guaranteed a good cinematic experience with their gigantic screens and surround sound, but you have to pay a hefty admission cost, which isn’t compensated for when you buy the food either. If you want a big snack and a drink and two tickets to see the latest film, it’s going to blow a hole in your wallet. The food is hardly exciting, certainly, the popcorn is rather tasteless and the hot snacks uninspired for such a big company. The seating is rather comfortable, but has the same problem has the Odeon in that they’ll only do for a 90 minute teenybopper film, not an edge-of-your-seat thriller or the latest epic from James Cameron. The UCI makes a good choice if you have money to flash, but for most, the Warner should top the playing bill every time.
