Filled with letters home, personal logs, photos and models of the harbous before and after the attack. The museum was heart renching but it did not prepare me for the actual experience of the Arizona visit.
You first enter a cinema and watch a short film about the attack, the film uses real footage and explains the history of that fateful day. At the end of the film the entire cinema was silent, people were quitely crying. It was moving. We then headed over to the Arizona to see the memorial. I can not explain to you the experience because you have to go for yourself. If your interested in the history, the war, the people or not you must go to see the Arizona if you get the chance. Take your children, take your parents and see the Arizona. There are still people burried in the wreckage of the sunken ships, the oil still seeps through the hull. You will remeber your experience for ever.

Advantages: Sensitive and incredibly informative memorial, in a beautiful setting. Disadvantages: There are a limited number of tours each day so you may have to wait for more than an hour.
The USS Arizona, a US battleship (BB-39), had an adventurous life, but it is perhaps its death, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which had the greater impact on history. As the scenes and pictures of this ship exploding, with 1,177 of its crew still aboard, was a major catalyst for the entry of the USA into the Second World War. I think everyone's response to and feelings during and after their visit to the USS Arizona Memorial ... ...provding the history of the USS Arizona and the other battleships stationed and destroyed there.
Once the film ended we then filtered onto a boat in order to make the crossing to the memorial (it is the only way to get there). Its incredibly well organised, so there was no difficulties or hold ups getting people on board. Designed by Alfred Preis, the memorial itself looks like a floating structure which hoovers above the shallow sunken remains ...

This is really the "must see" attraction for visitors to Honolulu, with the USSArizonamemorial drawing in so many visitors that it has to open at 7am daily to give everyone who wants to a chance of getting in. For this reason there are understandably a lot of organised tours heading out to Pearl Harbor, which tend to leave very early in the morning (we were picked up for ours at 6.30am, and this is by no means unusual) to make sure that the tour party gets in without have to wait too long. We were advised by our local travel rep that it is best to arrive either early in the morning to minimise waiting time - the memorial can only hold a certain number of people, so you have a timed ticket - or come later in the day when the tour groups have gone, but when there is no guarantee of getting in at all ...
