If you are a beer lover and you're planning a trip to Prague, you will be in for a real treat. The Czechs are world famous for their pilsner style beers. These golden lagers are wonderful thirst quenchers on a hot summer day. These are excellent beers but the Czechs also make several splendid dark lagers. The dark beers are also well worth Czeching out.
That brings me to Pivovar U Fleku. This is one of the most famous watering holes in Prague. This brewpub was founded in 1499. The British beer writer Michael Jackson (as opposed to the American singer of ill repute) cites this as the oldest brewpub in the world. A brewpub, by definition is an establishment that brews its own beers on the premises.
It is located at 11 Kremencova. Interestingly, this area is regarded by natives as the "new town". It is near the city center and is relatively easy to find. There is a large clock on the outsiding protruding over the sidewalk. The outside of the building is rather unspectacular. It would be easy for someone not seeking it out to quickly walk by without a glance.
But this is one book that shouldn't be judged by its cover. U Fleku is a must visit for the beer connoisseur. Inside there are several beer halls of varying decor. There is a beer garden and even a cabaret that requires reservations. They have a little gift shop as well for those who may wish to purchase a souvenir mug or t-shirt.
They only serve one beer. It is a dark lager. It is loosely similar to the Munich dark lager style. It has a spicy maltiness in the flavor. The big head holds up well. It weighs in at around 4.5% abv so it won't get one tanked too quickly. This strength is actually a bit on the low side for the style. Most versions exceed 5% abv. The beer is very easy to quaff and the staff is very quick to replace empty glass. You won't have to ask once. When you are ready to leave, you will have to tell them to stop bringing beer.
They serve a fairly basic menu with a few traditional Czech courses. There are several pork and beef dishes with kraut and fried breads. The menu is printed in six different languages so foreigners will have an easy time ordering their food. I found that most of the staff could speak at least some English anyway.
I have only been to U Fleku three times. I have to say that I greatly enjoyed it each time. I wish they had a couple more beer styles, though. The dark lager they serve is excellent. It would be nice if they could try their hand at another style or two. It should be noted that although Czech beers are excellent, variety is not a strong point. It is nevertheless, a haven for the serious beer drinker.
Advantages: Unique beer brewed on the premises Disadvantages: Over zealous waiters
...beer hall and restaurant of U Fleku, named after Jakub Flekovsky who bought it in 1762. It houses the smallest brewery in Prague which makes a dark, sweet beer that is not available anywhere else. The building itself is worth a look, particularly the walled garden at the rear with its attractive frescos and enormous chestnut trees beneath which are benches where you can enjoy your ale and typical local food (beware falling fruit in the autumn!) If ... ...look around without buying a drink (ask first) but once you succumb to trying the beer you'll have to fend off the waiters who tend to bring you another without asking. They are aware of their touristic value and play up to it a little, but don't let that put you off. ...

Advantages: Beautiful baroque architecture, inexpensive, fine culture. Disadvantages: presence of touts
,founded in 1896, is a fine orchestra. Indeed the visitor cannot walk the streets of Prague without being made aware of the musical heritage. Regular concerts are held at the Smetana Hall,at the Dvorak Hall and, when the weather is good,on the steps of the National Museum.
Jazz too has a good following whilst music, cabaret and dancing are all featured at the downtown variety clubs. Theatre too is alive and well in Prague. The Lanterna Magica is a good joint to see a unique Czech magic lantern show and the Theatre Image features "Black Theatre",which combines dance, music and pantomine to tell exciting stories.
Without doubt the most popular beverage in town is ...beer. Not only is Czech beer excellent but it is also quite strong. You can enjoy it together with a few sausages or gulas at UFleku which specialises in brown ale, or at the U Tomase ...
Advantages: Cheap. Magnificent architecture, great beer, good food, good shopping Disadvantages: Touts. Not too many Czechs speak English.
both excellent dark lagers.
Pubs have been a revered social institution in Prague for several hundred years and perhaps its not surprising that the Czech Republic ranks first in the world in terms of per capita beer consumption. This country also had the first beer museum in the world and legendary Pilsner beer originated in the city of Plzen in1842 whilst the first Budweiser was developed in the Czech Republic. Prague's UFleku pub houses probably the most famous microbrewery in the world and beer can be regarded as being engrained in Czech culture. Indeed, the beer industry is part of the national heritage.
Today Prague has five operating breweries. Three are large industrial breweries, viz, Staropramen - with major shareholding by Bass Charrington - Branik and Prazan (or Mestan) and there are two micro breweries which are UFleku ...

the city tour never the less. We saw all important sights?..
Later on we got the possibility to eat and drink at UFleku, which is a famous brewery. After it I did some shopping with some mates, our famous shop in Prague now seems to be Tesco, as we have been there nearly every day?. Returning from Tesco we used the Metro for first time, confessing that the escalator has a 45°C angel, which is optimal for people, who want to commit suicide, we call the escalator because of this ?Selbstmordrolltreppen? Arriving at the ?Andel? bus stop it was our first time using the bus, and it was a fast tip to our hotel?.
In the evening we had a ?Zimmersession?.
On Saturday, 5 July we went to the Hradcany Castle and its area., having a look at the premonstaratension strahov monastery. Later on we saw the Cathedral of St Vitus and the building, where ...
