Ubud is an amazingly easy place to get around (with a map), almost grid-like, and after doing the Monkey Forest Sanctuary (a tourist must), you walk up (and i do mean up) Monkey Forest road to find all sorts of tourist-junk shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and yoga/relaxation centres, until you arrive at Cafe Wayan, the place where i fell in love.

This is fast becoming a travelogue (See 'The Scam in Kuta' and "Safe and Sanur').

(Although, as i walk away, i always feel that i shoud have haggled some more).
Anyway, the Artini was amazing; wooden, two-tier cottage, huge bed, verandah, whirring fan, hot and cold water, and views out across the paddy fields, lush and green; plus complimentary flask of tea. And all for a tenner - quite expensive really; though that does include your breakfast and the large open-air pool, and, of course, choice of sun-lounger. I liked it.

In the window of this patisserie you'll espy all sorts of delicious items; cakes made with pineapple, jackfruit, melon, apple, orange; all of them, i'm sure, equally as good as the next; but none, none so fine as the tender, moist delicacy that had me coming back each day that i was in Ubud.
Banana Cake. Banana Cake. Banana Cake. (So good i said it thrice)
Complimented by a bitter coffee. And afterwards, a cigarette, as you do.
For five consecutive mornings, this was my ritual - and then i had to leave.
I've got to say that Ubud is a really good place to chill; although its also got a little night life; as in video cafes (quite fun), cockfighting (not my preference), an excellent indoor market, and the obligatory balinese dancing for tourists. Its also got some very good Internet cafes, which are cheaper than in Sanur and Kuta.
Though i wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a singles holiday, it's very good as a base for hitting the rest of Bali; and also for some of the adventure trips that are being run: Kayaking, rafting, cycling, trekking and so forth. The food and the restaurants are excellent, and the beer's not bad either; Bintang, being my particular favourite.
Would i recommend it? Lets just say that i'm going back in april.
Advantages: Inexpensive and Diverse, with a Great Monkey Forest and Temples Disadvantages: Very Touristy
My husband and I visited Ubud while we were in Bali on our honeymoon, and I really loved it. The streets are lined with little shops selling jewelry, wood work (we got some beautiful little teak bowls), textiles, etc, and it was chock full of people. I really enjoyed the fast pace of it - compared to rural Bali, where time seems to exist differently than in the West, Ubud was full of action. However, this blessing was also, in some ways, a curse, ... ...hire a motorbike?
Geographically, Ubud is pretty much right in the middle of Bali - therefore there are no beaches. Inland Bali is mountainous (Volcanic, really) and gorgeous, though; our villa overlooked a valley with a stream in it, with rice paddies decorating the slopes of the hills. Ubud is the arts and crafts capital of Bali, so in addition to tourist wares, there are a number of different galleries and museums to visit. The city is home to ...

...my purple prose here, putting Ubud into works tends to do that to me. It is simply one of the most gentle, glorious places on earth, and one where you'll almost certainly be removed from the troubles that sometimes affect other parts of Indonesia.
Take the time to stay, to talk to people and you'll feel so welcome too, you'll be invited to dinner with local families, to weddings, to colourful cremation ceremonies or even to a cockfight. Every day ...

...go on a trip to Ubud to see the legendary Legong dancing. The dancing takes place in the ruins of Ubud Palace in the dark and is extremely dramatic. The town of Ubud itself is quite scruffy but this was more than compensated for by the magic of the ruins and the dancing. It was pretty packed by the time we got there and it would be a good idea to get there early to ensure a good view. There are plenty of places in Ubud to eat before the dancing and ...

with some money just to get away from them which has made this very untypical part of Bali quite ugly to most visitors, but my advise would be if any one tries to stop with a sales pitch just to be polite say no thank you and carry on walking. I would not really recommend this part of Bali to honeymooners or families but for those younger people who are out for some excitement.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN BALI
There are lots of things to do in Bali including tours of the island the one we went on was the Handicraft Villages & Ubud Tour, which cost around £30 pound for the two of us but I would recommend you book this from your hotel and not one of the street sellers' as they do tend to try and charge you extra and some times not turn up at all and try and charge you for a no show fee but just be careful.
This Tour does take about 8 hours ...
