.. it's astonishingly beautiful, relaxed, gentle and strangely restorative. So many people come here intending to stay just a few days, and find a week later that they still haven't left. The days drift by as you wander the exquisite padi field countryside, journey to ornate Balinese temples set among the padis, visit active volcanoes, shop, play with the sacred monkeys in the town's forest, shop some more for enticing carved balinese goodies, spend hours over delicious food in open air cafes watching the sun set over the hills and listen to the frogs begin their nighttime song, or wander up to the old palace to watch delicately beautiful Balinese dancers perform to the chimes of the gamelan - all for a few pounds a day. You'll just have to excuse my purple prose here, putting Ubud into works tends to do that to me. It is simply one of the most gentle, glorious places on earth, and one where you'll almost certainly be removed from the troubles that sometimes affect other parts of Indonesia.
Take the time to stay, to talk to people and you'll feel so welcome too, you'll be invited to dinner with local families, to weddings, to colourful cremation ceremonies or even to a cockfight. Every day on Bali is a sacred day somewhere and you'd be unlucky not to encounter a festival if you're in Ubud for any length of time. Ignore Kuta and head for this paradise - you won't regret it!
