Damascus

Advantages: Beautiful and ancient city
Disadvantages: Not well advertised

minarets. - The tomb of John the Baptist (known by Muslims as Prophet Yahia) is situated in the Umayyad Mosque. It was visited by the Pope John Paul II last May in a first-ever visit by a Pope to a Muslim mosque. - Azem Palace: Home to the Museum of the Arts & Popular Traditions of Syria. It was built from alternating lines of black basalt and white limestone. - St Paul's Chapel: In the Christian Quarter, east of the Old City. - Takiyyeh as-Sulaymaniyyeh: A beautiful mosques located to the south of Barada River. It was designed in the sixteenth century. Also there are plenty of tourist sites close to Damascus like Bosra and Zabadani. The best time to visit Syria is either April to June or September to November because the weather will be moderate (15 C night and 25-30 C day time), however the rest of the year is either cold ...

Dimashq...Damascus

Advantages: Fascinating old city with mosques, markets and monuments galore.
Disadvantages: Too hot in summer, miserable in winter, polluted and chaotic traffic

the Christian quarter, the ruined synagogue with the Star of David carved on the door, or my favourite local hammam. I can?t point out on your map how to find a stray Roman archway or where to smoke nargileh in a local café wedged between a mosque and a church. Well, I probably could, but it would spoil all your fun? OTHER OLD DISTRICTS You can wander round the old city for months and every day discover something new. But don?t limit your explorations to inside the city walls, as there are several crumbling old suburbs hidden among the urban sprawl of modern Damascus, each of them worth a visit to really escape the tourist trail. An easy one to find is just down from the entrance to Souq Al-Hamidiyya. If you can cross the highway without becoming a traffic accident statistic, head south for a few minutes then turn right under an archway. You ...

Haji Ali Mosque, great Muslim Architecture

Advantages: Cheap, friendly people, ecellent view
Disadvantages: Delays, crowd

I been to Mumbai number of times mostly on official errands, naturally had little time for sight-seeing and I regretted it most of the time, main reasons being my inherent weakness and curiosity about Muslim history and their curious propensity for excellent art work. Who can forget the great ?Taj Mahal?, one of nine Wonders of the World, a piece unbelievable example of Islamic architecture and a tribute to Shahzahan?s great love for his wife Mumtaz. But during my recent visit I was determined to at least have a look at the eye catching Haji Ali Mosque. It was a decision that I will never rue. WHO WAS HAJI ALI: Syed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, Haji Ali who is believed to be a wealthy local business man in Bukharia, in the ancient Persian Empire now in Uzbekistan. Haji Ali traveled around the world in the early 1400s ...
