This area is great if you like shopping. and it is easy to get to. The old cable cars run up one side of the square (along Powell), there is a bus stop in Geary street and the BART (underground train) stop is at the bottom of Powell street - about 5 minutes from the square. The BART is very cheap, the ticket from the airport to union square costing $5.15 single journey.

As a result the prices are quite high. There are also a number of fast food outlets a short walk off the square - where you can pick up a large pizza slice for $2.95
The only down side is that there is a lot of homeless people in this area. Although the homeless people mostly sit quietly on street corners with a cup in hand, one or two will be more direct. This can be a little intimidating at first.
It is a great area to walk around though - even if you are only just window shopping!
Advantages: Comfortable, Friendly, Good Facilities Disadvantages: Parking at the front of the hotel is sometimes difficult
We stayed at the Chancellor Hotel by accident! We had hotel vouchers for our visit to San Francisco but the hotel we stayed in on our first night was so awful (and in one of the more dangerous areas of the city - we heard that the street on which it was situated had the highest murder rate in San Francisco!) that we decided to ring San Francisco Reservations, a hotel broker mentioned in our guide book. Hotel brokers basically rent out hotel rooms at short notice at lower than advertised prices. That is how we were able to stay in the Chancellor, which is a 3 star hotel, for $50 per night! According to the hotel's website, special room rates start at $125 per night, so we definitely got a good deal by going through San Francisco Reservations!
The Chancellor Hotel is right on UnionSquare in the centre of San Francisco and is convenient ...
Advantages: right on union square - near the shops Disadvantages: long walk to the wharf
on these.
The hotel is situated right on unionsquare - which is handy if you like shopping, as all the major stores are a short walk from the hotel.
It is also situated 5 minutes walk from the BART - underground train (powell street stop) which is a cheap and convenient way of getting from the airport ($10.30 return from the airport)
If you want to get to Fishermans wharf / golden gate bridge it is a long walk! (about 40 minutes to the wharf) or you can get on the old cable cars - which stop right outside the hotel. ...
Advantages: Location and price! Disadvantages: None - unless you're not looking for a 2* hotel!
This 2* hotel situated within 2 blocks of UnionSquare is everything it promises to be and more. Whilst a little tired in some public areas, the rooms themselves are clean with more than adequate facilities. The room I stayed in looked like it had been recently refurbished with a full en suite bathroom overhaul. A rarity was to find both a small fridge and microwave in the room.
The hotel has easy access to various MUNI bus routes and is a 5 block downhill walk to Market Street and the F Line to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. There are numerous restaurants and take-aways within easy walking distance of the hotel.
For the budget conscious, this is a great little hotel in a great location with easy access to public transport links. ...
