The most haunted castle in Britain
Advantages: Beautiful castle and grounds Disadvantages: None
...couple of months ago was Chillingham Castle. This remarkable castle with its alarming dungeons and torture chambers has, since the twelve-hundreds, been continuously owned by the same family line. It is the home of Sir Humphry Wakefield Bt., his wife The Hon. Lady Wakefield and their family. It was a 12th century stronghold, and became a fully fortified castle in 1344. It occupied a strategic position as a fortress during Northumberland's border ... ...badgers reside there also. Chillingham castle I have always thought is very aptly named, as 'chilling' is a word I would use to describe it when standing outside looking up to the castle, which I think gives off a sense of foreboding. It is said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain and was named the most haunted castle in Britain. Indeed it has been subject to many ghost hunting vigils. Living TV's Most Haunted have visited to film an ...

Duntulm Castle, Isle of Skye
Advantages: Free to visit Disadvantages: Only ruins
...more to choose from. Duntulm Castle stands on the rocky north coast of Skye on the western tip of the Trotternish peninsula. It was only a few miles from where I was staying in Uig and as it was clearly marked on the tourist map I thought that I ought to check it out. I visited on a sunny day in May 2009 and the first thing that struck me was its location. I know that by their definition as a defensive structure castles always occupy a prominent ... ...the majority of other castles Duntulm is not visible from afar. It is obvious straight away that this castle was constructed as a coastal defence to prevent attack from the sea rather than from land. Duntulm is a small village on the A855 coastal road that goes right around the Trotternish peninsula from Uig to Staffin. The castle lies just outside the village and is sign-posted from the main road. There is a small car parking area which is on the ...

Dun Carloway Broch
Advantages: An interesting structure, free to visit Disadvantages: Remote location
...the community. The broch at Dun Carloway on the north west coast of Lewis is one of the best remaining examples to be found. The broch is circular in shape and constructed from local stone. There is no cement between the stones but instead it has been built using a similar method to that used in the building of the dry stone walls that you see in the countryside. The other notable feature is that the structure is hollow, although it is thought that ... ...a signpost to the Dun Carloway Broch from the A858, which is the main coastal road around the north and west of the island. It is located in close proximity to several of the other attractions on the island (Gearrannan, Callanish Stones etc) so the broch is a very popular tourist attraction and it has the distinction of not only having a mention on the road signs but also having its own visitor centre. The visitor centre is located next to the car ...

The Arnol Black House
Advantages: Fantastic insight into how the islanders lived Disadvantages: Small admission fee, remote location
Arnol is a small village on the remote northern coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Today the village comprises of a number small crofts scattered across a large area but if you look closer you will see the remains of many Black Houses interspersed between the more modern houses. Black Houses are as far as I know unique to the North West Highlands of Scotland and represent a way of life for the people that have lived here, virtually in isolation ... ...the Arnol Black Houses was abandoned in 1974 but thankfully the Black House at No. 42 within the village has been preserved and turned into a museum for future generations to see how these people lived.
It is a common assumption that the Black Houses derived their name because they had no chimney and very tiny windows so the interior of these buildings were very dark and the walls were black from the smoke of the peat fires that burned day and night. ...
