Do Enjoy Your Stay - We Did!!! Advantages: Location, Facilities, Service Disadvantages: Cost Well words cannot describe how excited I was to be going to the Marriott for a romantic night away! Upon arriving my Fiance and I cannot help but notice how spotless the area is - inside and out. So good start! IReception staff dealt with all customers quickly, no-one was kept waiting around for ages. We actually got our room number, key and had our credit card details taken (for room service etc) within a very short space of time indeed! I would ... ...were very helpful offering to make reservations in the bar and grill for an evening meal and offering to have a paper delivered next morning. We opted for a table at 7pm to have a meal as they had a special Valentine's menu on. Save yourself! Advantages: Has a shuttle to airport Disadvantages: Everything apart from shuttle! Awful. Never again! Rooms: Tatty, dated, dark, dingy, stuffy. Mattresses lumpy and bedding worn and smelt damp. Furniture in the room was worn and grubby. Not as they state "They are also very comfortable and tastefully decorated". Windows filthy, mouldy and flimsy. I would not have felt safe on the ground floor. Hairdryer nailed to draw but unable to reach plug socket! Very little tea and coffee in the room and the milk was off! Noisy main road, ... ...4am for a flight. No toiletries i.e. soap. TV remote had batteries missing. Then when I took it down for some, the remote did not work the TV anyway! TV buttons were broken. Poor quality picture. Not many channel choices. Web sites say they have a trouser press in the rooms; there was not one in either of our rooms. Breakfast only served after 5am. Odd when people are checking in and out all night and the desk is 24 hours. To sleep... perchance to dream... Advantages: Location, quality, food Disadvantages: Price ...that it's no longer a MacDonald - the hotel has been sold to the Mercure group, part of Accor. Although I couldn't give a toss about the brand on the letterhead, I overheard several guests commenting on the fact it was no longer a MacDonald hotel, so I guess it's important to some people. If you're one of them, be advised. Stratford-upon-Avon. One of my favourite places in the world. So when I booked tickets to both parts of Henry IV last month, I decided I'd do things properly. The Shakespeare Hotel is exactly what you'd expect of a hotel in Stratford. relaxing retreat Advantages: close to public transport Disadvantages: rooms were a bit shabby I grew up in and around the area of Sutton Coldfield and had always wanted to stop at this hotel so when I saw a bargain on the internet of £50 for the room I jumped at the chance and promptly booked me and my partner in for a night. We were in the process of buying a house and things were getting pretty stressful so a night away in a hotel making use of spa facilities seemed like bliss! Royal connections but not that luxurious -Durham Marriott hotel Advantages: Comfortable, convenient for city sight seeing Disadvantages: luke warm bath water and average food in restaurant Durham Marriot Hotel Royal County Old Elvert, Durham DH1 3JN A BIT OF SCENE SETTING: This hotel is part of the Marriott chain but is an old hotel which was once the home of Elizabeth Bowes an ancestor of the Queen Mother. Apparently it was often visited when it was privately owned by Edward VII when he was up in Durham. It has had quite a large series of extensions and now boasts 150 bedrooms, some of which are suites and family rooms all and have ... ...right in the centre of Durham so perfect for a city break as you can park your car in the hotel (complimentary) car park and walk round the city which is very compact and just a hop over the road from the hotel.
