A perfect, quiet weekend away
Advantages: Excellent location, service and facilities Disadvantages: Quite expensive; hardly a thrill-seeker's paradise
...acres of woodland, adjacent to Newcastle Racecourse and about 4 miles north of Newcastle city centre, the Marriott Gosforth Park's location is unrivalled for space and sheer greenery. Literally 30 seconds' drive from the A1, it is nevertheless so far removed from hustle and bustle that you could be in the middle of the Yorkshire dales. The building itself is some way short of spectacular, viewed externally. It is grey brick, very angular, functional ... ...patch for British architecture as Newcastle City Council have recently realised, looking on in dismay as the cost of demolishing the bulk of the abysmal John Dobson Street skyrockets. T. Dan Smith's legacy is finally being put to rest at long last and you'll be hard-pushed to find someone in Newcastle who's crying about it.
Inside the hotel is a wholly different matter; the marble floors of the reception area are elegant and beautifully polished ...

A Village Gem
Advantages: A personal touch goes a long way Disadvantages: May be too out of the way for some
...hotel, which is known as Ryton Country Club. It is a popular place locally for wedding receptions, and at a recent celebration I was surprised considering the village location, to discover from the very friendly staff that they also cater for a large and loyal travelling business clientele, and for this and other guests wireless internet is available hotel wide and free of charge.
As I have mentioned, the hotel is situated in Ryton, a small village, ... ...minutes from the centre of Newcastle, or a little bit further the other way takes you to Hexham and the gorgeous Northumberland with it's many attractions. However, once you are in the hotel, you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle, so it is ideal for a relaxing break. There is a small free car park, but I would imagine high season this would fill up quickly so you would have to park on the adjoining road. 10 minutes walk or 2 minutes ...

Basic ok for overnight stop
Advantages: Central location Disadvantages: Basic ok for overnight and short stays.
Stayed at this hotel on several occassions, usually booked in the Travelodge Sale, and always been satisfied. Rooms are basic and good value when booked at discount, but we feel the Premier nearby offers better value if paying the full rate.
Rooms have basic tea making facilities, bathrooms with showers over and basic tv packages. Beds have always been comfortable and extra bedding provided on request. No on site food service other than the shrink ... ...value. Hotel is next to the main shopping centre in Hemel Hempstead where there are several cafes, all a bit pricey. Several other restaurants nearby.
If opens are open at night, noise can be a problems as this is on the race route around the town centre. Car park is small for the number of rooms and finding a space if arriving late at night can be a problem. Car parks are available nearby at a cost. ...

Basic but a good overnight stop
Advantages: Good location, basic accomodation good value at discount rate Disadvantages: Basic, only ok for short stop over or base.
...are basic as with all travelodge Hotels and have either a bath or shower room. Each room has basic TV and tea making facilities. Beds have been comfortable on each visit and each bedding/pillows provided when requested. The hotel is just off the main A303 but we have never had any issues with noise but have not opened the windows either. The hotel is in a small service area next to a Little Chef where basic meals are available. We have not used this ...

Premier Inn Gatwick - Exceptional value for money, comfy & clean!
Advantages: Excellent value for money, very comfortable, clean and tasty food. Disadvantages: A bus ride away from the North terminal
I have flown from Gatwick airport early in the morning on several occasions and have always found it much easier to stay the night before and leisurely wander over to the North Terminal in the morning rather than try and make my way down in the car or on the train. I have stayed at both the Sofitel at Gatwick and the Premier Inn therefore, will review both however please be aware this is for the Premier Inn at Gatwick.
I have stayed at the Premier ... ...shower.
The Premier Inn Gatwick has a restaurant downstairs as well as a bar where you can order food from their bar menu. The restaurant menu is simple but the food is good, and includes dishes such as Spaghetti Bolognese and steak (as of September 2009). The bar menu is a little more basic with dishes such as pizza and burgers taking pride of place. The beauty of the bar menu however, is that you can order your food and then take it back to your ...
