The Hotel
The Bedford Swan Hotel ... ...occupying a great position on the banks of the River Ouse right next to the Town Bridge. The hotel was built in 1794 for the 5th Duke of Bedford and was acquired by Paten Hotels in 1916, who remain the long run owners to this day.
The Hotel is the ideal base for exploring the local area featuring 104 Standard Bedrooms (£140) and 9 Superior Bedrooms (Additional £10 fee), each is large and comfortable and offers all the amenities you could need, colour ...

Pretty Basic
Advantages: Easy to find Disadvantages: Posh travelodge
...must. I booked the Holiday Inn Garden Court at Sandy near Bedford just off the A1, 20 miles from Cambridge - £70 for the room. Easy to book online with an e-mail confirmation to follow.
Easy to find as well - you really can't miss it - it looks like a Travelodge and inside it looks like one too! Small cramped reception area with a bar in what looks like a storage cupboard.
The staff were friendly and efficient and I was booked in within seconds.
... ...and clean enough with what was obviously a refurbished bathroom. No freebies though and the room was almost without decoration. It was just about passable to sleep 1 night before a conference. The hotel is close to the A1 so traffic noise was a bit of a problem - waking up to the sound of lorries is no joke.
The restaurant is also pretty cramped too, only 40 covers for a 57 room hotel - but it was quiet and the food was OK - well cooked, nicely ...

THE UNFRIENDLY CLUB'' -
Advantages: None Disadvantages: So many
...will refuse to do especially when they have taken £25 of my good earned cash.
They really do not care about their members, they seem to forget that it is us members that keep them in a job.
Avoid the camping and caravan club like the plague. ...

Holiday Inn Shepperton - prebooked? Beware - if you cancel
Advantages: NONE Disadvantages: ALL
...to cancel the stay with Holiday Inn re the current extreme bad weather problems for the journey by car from the North West for my 93 year old mother whose health would not be up to making such a potentially dangerous / uncertain journey.
Holiday Inn Shepperton have refused to give us a refund for cancellation of the booking which we find unbelievable given the current weather conditions.
Its the Holiday Inn attitude that pees me off, basically ... ...had a problem with a Holiday Inn booking in the '80s in the USA - wishing to transfer from a Holiday Inn in Hollywood where we had been staying to one at Anaheim - they made the transfer ok - but still charged us for the days stay not taken at Hollywood !
BEWARE FOLKS IF YOU MAKE A PREPAID BOOKING WITH HOLIDAY INNS AND THEN NEED TO CANCEL - THEY WILL STILL CHARGE YOU REGARDLESS !! BETTER NOT TO BOOK AT ALL AND JUST TURN UP IF YOU NEED TO USE HOLIDAY ...

A freezing cold with broken heating not so Welcome Cottage
Advantages: nice spacious family holiday home Disadvantages: no help contactable when heating broken in mid-winter
...in Norfolk - arranged though Welcome Cottages, although you can rent this place through other sites like Country Cottages too. The house is owned by Mike Franklin, who would appear to own many holiday lets - he certainly owns number 5 Bure Cottages too.
We arrived at 4pm in deep snow (with more falling) to a house so cold you could see your breath in the living room. The heating was broken and we couldn't find any instructions on who to contact ... ...times in 2 hours) or Welcome cottages (tried them at just after 5pm and they were shut - and no emergency number on ansaphone) Eventually (after 2 hours there with miserable cold 2 + 4 year old) a heating engineer we'd left a message with called us back and talked us through relighting the pilot light. We had to partly dismantle the kitchen cabinet to do this, with our own tools, and there's no way we'd have been able to work this out without the ...
