Cracking night's sleep, by George!
Advantages: Comfortable, historic hotel Disadvantages: Bar shuts too early!
Thanks to the ticket touts (aka parasitic scum), I couldn't get tickets to any of the Manic Street Preachers' London gigs on their recent tour. As the Manics are a band that seem to be constantly on the verge of retirement, you don't like to miss an opportunity to see them live, so I booked the Reading concert.
Over the years, I've decided my least favourite aspect of going to concerts is travelling home afterwards - ever since my sister threw up ... ...from the Newport leg of Radioheard's Big Tent Tour. So I decided to book a hotel, and I decided I wanted a NICE hotel.
The George Hotel is apparently the oldest building in Reading. It's incredibly easy to find, right at the heart of the town centre, and about a ten minute walk from the train station. From the outside, it looks like some horrific mock Tudor nightmare, but you have to let it off because it's actually a Tudor building.
Inside, however, ...

Fantastic break at good price
Advantages: Great facilities, Excellent Staff, Family Friendly Disadvantages: Close to football stadium
We stayed here for a week in August. Check-in was very quick and the staff had put a cot in our room for our little one which was great. The rooms are a good size and are of a nice finish, fresh and quiet. The bed is a good size and the bathroom was nice and very clean - as was the room.
The pool is ace. It's warm and our little one enjoyed a swim because there is a cordoned off lane. The gym provides everything needed for a good workout.
I was ... ...because it's close to the stadium and it was Reading's first ever game in the premiership. But there were no problems at all and you would have hardly noticed that a game was on at all. Additional staff were put on to deal with issues like parking - we were kept a space and very few away fans came into the hotel after the game (I think they were guests anyway!). It was very quiet in the night which was ideal.
The hotel has special offers for Legoland ...

Fabulous 4-star hotel for weddings and pampering!
Advantages: Exclusive, Friendly staff, Impeccible Service, unique decor, amazing food, huge wine list, well-kept grounds, statues Disadvantages: Very popular and busy when Newbury Race Course meetings are on
...I first stayed at Donnington Valley hotel in 2001 for just one night when on a job interview. I wasn't offered the job, but that one night with dinner and breakfast was enough to convince me that this was a special hotel. Special enough that 3 years later I got married there.
Now... the fact that I got married there may make me biased and it nearly stopped me from writing this review. However, so many of our friends and family have gone back again ... ...be wrong!
Originally, the hotel had 58 rooms. All decorated to very high standards with a number of suites available. Over the past 2 years though they have expanded the hotel to almost double their room capacity to 111 all of which have been revamped in very luxurious creams, reds and browns.
At the same time they have added a Spa to the hotel which was the only thing I ever felt was missing from the hotel originally. (However, the opportunity ...

Basic ok for overnight stop
Advantages: Central location Disadvantages: Basic ok for overnight and short stays.
Stayed at this hotel on several occassions, usually booked in the Travelodge Sale, and always been satisfied. Rooms are basic and good value when booked at discount, but we feel the Premier nearby offers better value if paying the full rate.
Rooms have basic tea making facilities, bathrooms with showers over and basic tv packages. Beds have always been comfortable and extra bedding provided on request. No on site food service other than the shrink ... ...value. Hotel is next to the main shopping centre in Hemel Hempstead where there are several cafes, all a bit pricey. Several other restaurants nearby.
If opens are open at night, noise can be a problems as this is on the race route around the town centre. Car park is small for the number of rooms and finding a space if arriving late at night can be a problem. Car parks are available nearby at a cost. ...

Basic but a good overnight stop
Advantages: Good location, basic accomodation good value at discount rate Disadvantages: Basic, only ok for short stop over or base.
...are basic as with all travelodge Hotels and have either a bath or shower room. Each room has basic TV and tea making facilities. Beds have been comfortable on each visit and each bedding/pillows provided when requested. The hotel is just off the main A303 but we have never had any issues with noise but have not opened the windows either. The hotel is in a small service area next to a Little Chef where basic meals are available. We have not used this ...
