No longer a Palace

Advantages: Good food, useful base for exploring surrounding area
Disadvantages: Badly in need of a multi million pound refit

...en route was to be the Palace Buxton. From a distance, the grand façade was quite impressive, however, upon closer inspection, it was obvious that the hotel had spent little on it, e.g. the windows were surrounded by flaking paintwork, some of the wood cladding supporting drainpipes were rotting away. This essence of bygone (albeit very bygone) grandeur continued inside the reception. The reception itself was large with high ceilings, supported by ...
...a little too cocky. The suite I had booked was worthy of that of a three star hotel, not a four star one. The furnishings were cheap, the carpet, along with everything else was in need of a jolly good clean. The view was quite attractive - I could see the parkland and town centre, however, it was marred by more rotting wood supporting drainpipes! The bathroom was not marble (or indeed any other stone) or mosaic tiled (the only two things I find ...

Steeped in history

Advantages: Character, excellent food.
Disadvantages: Character!

...imprisonment in the 1500s and old documentation pinpoints the four poster room, Mary's Bower, as where she was incarcerated. Don't expect marble bathrooms or a spa. This is an old building full of character with a choice of rooms, including four poster rooms. The DBB packages are tremendous value for money as the hotel provides excellent, locally sourced food in either the very grand dining room or bar. You get a reduction on the paid for parking ...

Review of Old Hall, Buxton

A Buxton Beauty?

Advantages: Front of the hotel, reception area and communal areas, friendly staff.
Disadvantages: Rooms, dated decor, bathrooms, dusty artificial flowers.

After having read several mixed reviews of this hotel on the internet before I stayed there, I was a little unsure what to expect. Having stayed there for 1 night I think the reason for the varying reviews is that in some ways the hotel is excellent, but there are some aspects which let the hotel down and it is probably the extent to which different people are bothered by these more negative aspects which results in such mixed reviews (I have read ...
...giving it 5/5 and lots in between!). The positives... In my opinion, the front of the hotel and the communal interior areas are beautiful, particularly the reception area and restaurant. There is a grand sweeping staircase leading up to the bedrooms, a lovely old-fashioned wooden revolving door into the hotel, elaborate pillars, a lot of gilt and grand decor. It reminded me a little bit of the Titanic. The entrance area and restaurant are very ...

Charles Cotton Hotel

Advantages: Good for lovers of the country and dog owners
Disadvantages: Meals a bit pricey

I stayed at this Hotel for one night last week. I was looking for a hotel in Derbyshire where I could meet up with my brother and also where we could take our dogs. It is not actually in Buxton, but a village called Hartington which is some miles south of Buxton. I arrived in the Village at around miday and was suprised to see the smount of people in the village square where the hotel is situated.a The staff greeted me in a friendly manner and I ...
...of the hotel to wait for my brother to arrive. There are quite a number of tables outside at the front of the hotel and a quite large car park at the rear where the beer garden is situated.. We were staying in the annex to the hotel and the bedrooms were large and well decorated with usual fascilities of an en suite bathroom and t.v. and tea and coffee making fascilities. There were plenty of towels available and the beds were double and the linen ...

Basic ok for overnight stop

Advantages: Central location
Disadvantages: Basic ok for overnight and short stays.

Stayed at this hotel on several occassions, usually booked in the Travelodge Sale, and always been satisfied. Rooms are basic and good value when booked at discount, but we feel the Premier nearby offers better value if paying the full rate. Rooms have basic tea making facilities, bathrooms with showers over and basic tv packages. Beds have always been comfortable and extra bedding provided on request. No on site food service other than the shrink ...
...value. Hotel is next to the main shopping centre in Hemel Hempstead where there are several cafes, all a bit pricey. Several other restaurants nearby. If opens are open at night, noise can be a problems as this is on the race route around the town centre. Car park is small for the number of rooms and finding a space if arriving late at night can be a problem. Car parks are available nearby at a cost. ...
