No longer a Palace

Advantages: Good food, useful base for exploring surrounding area
Disadvantages: Badly in need of a multi million pound refit

...en route was to be the Palace Buxton. From a distance, the grand façade was quite impressive, however, upon closer inspection, it was obvious that the hotel had spent little on it, e.g. the windows were surrounded by flaking paintwork, some of the wood cladding supporting drainpipes were rotting away. This essence of bygone (albeit very bygone) grandeur continued inside the reception. The reception itself was large with high ceilings, supported by ...
...a little too cocky. The suite I had booked was worthy of that of a three star hotel, not a four star one. The furnishings were cheap, the carpet, along with everything else was in need of a jolly good clean. The view was quite attractive - I could see the parkland and town centre, however, it was marred by more rotting wood supporting drainpipes! The bathroom was not marble (or indeed any other stone) or mosaic tiled (the only two things I find ...

...room by 12 noon. Credit cards accepted: Access, American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Mastercard, Solo, Switch and Visas. Bank cheques to value of 50 pounds only when accompanied by cheque guarantee card. Small toilet trained dogs are welcome! My family stayed here overnight on a recent trip to Alton Towers. This modern red bricked building, very much like most Holiday Inn designs, is set on the outskirts of an Industrial Estate, and a fairly quiet ...

Has this "Legacy" been forgotten?

Advantages: Clean, good price, all the basics
Disadvantages: Does not go that extra mile

...had imagined, clearly entitled “The Chesterfield Hotel,” which even lights up when it is dark making it more obvious! It is literally by a highway bridge, so outside it is not very attractive and it seems like you will be subjected to constant loud traffic noise. Check In ** My check-in was brief. I did not even need the voucher I printed from my email confirmation, just to sign some papers and confirm my address details. I was offered a wake-up ...
...you had to pay for it, unlike in most hotels) – he said they had pretty much “anything”. The receptionist then told me my room was on level 2 and I could either take the stairs or the lift – pointing each out. However, he then went off into the office behind reception, not to remerge that day. Another couple came in and were seen to by another woman in reception. I called the lift, which had the old-fashioned style door that unlocks for you to manually ...

Advantages: Little to none and I'm easily pleased!
Disadvantages: Read my reviews - the bed of creepy crawlies, the staff, the management, the food, the facilities

Review of the International Hotel, Burton Street, Derby - Friday 11th to Sunday 13th August 2006 My partner and I checked into the hotel on Friday 11th August as our friends were holding their wedding reception there on the Saturday. Although I had initial reservations about staying at this hotel due to the many negative reviews I'd read by 'googling' the hotel, as we checked in I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt. We were given room ...
...main hotel (which meant that we'd have to walk 5 minutes before getting to the main building to use the bar or for breakfast and also outside a main road bus stop!) but the room was pleasant and with it being away from the main building, it was also quite. However, first impressions were that the room could do with a good going over with a vacuum cleaner as thick layers of dirt and dust were clearly visible under the dressing table, the TV unit ...

Hotel or Motel? The answer follows:-

Advantages: Good prices! Near(ish) to Alton Towers.
Disadvantages: Basic (but do-able)

Location: The hotel is on the Westbound carriageway of the A50, and is just a couple of miles from the M1, off of J24. The A50 also joins up with the M6 at the other end. This is close to the East Midlands airport, Derby, Donnington Park race Track and Alton Towers. Be aware the adverts say its just 30 mins to Alton Towers. Treat the journey as 40 mins and you'll be ok. Note on Location: The hotel and facilities are ONLY available when travelling ...
...to go up to the junction with the M1 to be able to turn round (but its only a few mins away). Hotel or Motel: If your expecting something like the Hilton or Holiday Inn (plush and fancy) then you wont like it here. If you're used to places like Travelodge or Travelinn (quite basic) then you'll be fine here. Think of this as a Motel and you wont go far wrong. Car Park: Quite a large car park is available in the front of the hotel, with space for ...
