Lovely Lumley Advantages: Gorgeous setting, great service, great food Disadvantages: None... well, maybe the price! ...it appeared that place was Lumley Castle Hotel. Lumley Castle Hotel is a 14th Century Castle, named after its creator, Sir Ralph Lumley. It is situated in the town of Chester-le-Street, near Durham in Co. Durham and is situated very close to Durham Cricket Ground. The castle is owned by the earl of Scarborough but is managed as a hotel by No Ordinary Hotels. Booking the hotel was fairly easy. When finally the big day arrived, my husband was both surprised and shocked when I announced where we were going. The castle itself is really easy to find and it seemed very grand and imposing as we drove into the castle car park. Royal connections but not that luxurious -Durham Marriott hotel Advantages: Comfortable, convenient for city sight seeing Disadvantages: luke warm bath water and average food in restaurant Durham Marriot Hotel Royal County Old Elvert, Durham DH1 3JN A BIT OF SCENE SETTING: This hotel is part of the Marriott chain but is an old hotel which was once the home of Elizabeth Bowes an ancestor of the Queen Mother. Apparently it was often visited when it was privately owned by Edward VII when he was up in Durham. It has had quite a large series of extensions and now boasts 150 bedrooms, some of which are suites and family rooms all and have ... ...right in the centre of Durham so perfect for a city break as you can park your car in the hotel (complimentary) car park and walk round the city which is very compact and just a hop over the road from the hotel. Swallow This Advantages: brilliant Disadvantages: whitbread Swallow hotels were the best hotel brand in the country. They were owned by vaux at Sunderland for many many years till they turned PLC. Three years ago whitbread plc bought out the company and transformed the best into Marriott Brand Hotels. The plan was then to sell off the Swallow Hotels that were not branded , however this did not happen no real buyers and in fact some Swallow Hotels were doing really well. The two best hotels are Rushyford ... ...nice and cosy. Swallow hotels are called after the Swallow because they always return to the same place every year. The Place to Eat Advantages: The Food Disadvantages: Next to a Bus Garage Kingslodge hotel is really based upon an extremely good restauarant which has some hotel rooms above it. The prestigious restaurant , Knights Restaurant has a reputation for excellent food Kingslodge is one of my favourite places to stay. The food is always excellent, the rooms are always spotless , well decorated with quality furnishings. The ensuite bathrooms are spacious, modern and spotlessly clean. Comfortable stay in a historic building Advantages: Stylish and elegant with an excellent restaurant Disadvantages: Room initially cold - on a snowy January evening. ...advantage of an offer at Beamish Hall and paid around £135 total for dinner, bed and breakfast in a premier room. It was snowing when we drove up to this elegant building with ample car parking. The roaring fire in the reception hall was very welcoming, as was the greeting from the reception team. We were quickly directed to our huge room, with antique furniture and bed, and a newly installed double jacuzzi bathroom.
