King of the Castles?
Advantages: Stunning location, great service, good food Disadvantages: expensive, popular
(October 2005) We were invited to a family wedding, taking place in this magnificent building and stayed the night. What a location! Some rooms are located in this huge medieval castle itself, which has been cleverly rebuilt from a ruined shell. All the reception rooms within the castle are wonderfully decorated with an historical flavour: bare stonework, large oak doors, coats of arms, tapestries and suits of armour. There are alcoves and original ... ...are magnificent and it was disappointing that the weather was so appalling on the day. We did have a walk around before leaving in the morning. There are lovely extensive landscaped gardens with plenty of wildlife.
Our room was located downhill in the Castle View Rooms, probably tastefully converted stables. The room was spacious and the decor was rich and sumptuous. We had a generous bed with a canopy. The en-suite bathroom was bigger than my bathroom ...

A proper rest from £35.00 a night
Advantages: Location, staff, food, clean room, price Disadvantages: Basic rooms, poor mobile phone reception
...area, my mother recommend the Travellers Rest located between Hexham & a little village called Slaley. On the map they are about half way between Newcastle upon Tyne in the east & Carlisle in the west.
She said they were really good; however the last time she was there was in 1954!!! Apparently she worked down there & her & pals used to frequent the Travellers Rest every Saturday night. She said, that she didn't think it had changed much since 1954!!
... ...However a call to the Travellers Rest secured a room for the night & for the past four years I have used them on a regular basis.
The place is around 300 years old & was converted to an Inn around 1840. As you can imagine with the building being built in the 18th century it features period fittings, wooden roof beams, small windows & big heavy doors. Until recently it was run by a young couple but has just recently changed owners.
Although there ...

Riverdale Hall Hotel
Advantages: superb restaurant Disadvantages: bar can be very busy
Rooms are very adequate and fairly priced. The bar is well stocked with real ales and wines are carefuly picked by wine expert Jonathan Cocker. The restaurant offers high quality food using local produce. Thai dishes and Sri Lankan dishes were available. I went for seafood chowder to start followed by a refreshing lemon sorbet. For mains it was a juicy sirloin steak - the size of a squash racket and cooked to perfection, this was accompanyied by ... ...vegetables.
The swimming pool is warm and clean. The hotel overlooks the North Tyne and has a great reputation for fishing. The proprietor is a keen sportsman and despite being nearly sixty plays golf and cricket to high standard. The hotel has a sporting theme with its own cricket team who entertain touring sides from all over the world. ...

Basic ok for overnight stop
Advantages: Central location Disadvantages: Basic ok for overnight and short stays.
Stayed at this hotel on several occassions, usually booked in the Travelodge Sale, and always been satisfied. Rooms are basic and good value when booked at discount, but we feel the Premier nearby offers better value if paying the full rate.
Rooms have basic tea making facilities, bathrooms with showers over and basic tv packages. Beds have always been comfortable and extra bedding provided on request. No on site food service other than the shrink ... ...value. Hotel is next to the main shopping centre in Hemel Hempstead where there are several cafes, all a bit pricey. Several other restaurants nearby.
If opens are open at night, noise can be a problems as this is on the race route around the town centre. Car park is small for the number of rooms and finding a space if arriving late at night can be a problem. Car parks are available nearby at a cost. ...

Basic but a good overnight stop
Advantages: Good location, basic accomodation good value at discount rate Disadvantages: Basic, only ok for short stop over or base.
...are basic as with all travelodge Hotels and have either a bath or shower room. Each room has basic TV and tea making facilities. Beds have been comfortable on each visit and each bedding/pillows provided when requested. The hotel is just off the main A303 but we have never had any issues with noise but have not opened the windows either. The hotel is in a small service area next to a Little Chef where basic meals are available. We have not used this ...
