Reviews of Uruguay Experience »
An under-promoted tourist destination
Advantages: Cheap, fairly safe, great places to eat and see Disadvantages: Diverse people and places, with some being quite poor
I went to Uruguay for a month between June and July, 2008. Many places i'd been to before had been as a tourist, either being at a hotel or not staying for long enough to really get used to much at all. However, my girlfriend lives in Uruguay, so I went to stay with her and her family who aren't terribly rich, but could support me being there. As a result, I got a feel for what it is like to live there, rather than visit it. Most people that I know ... ...this, so sorry if it sounds like I am stereotyping UK people here!) have no idea where or what Uruguay is. I myself didn't know till recently. It is a small country (about a quarter of the size of france) located in South America, on the east coast just below Brazil and just above Argentina. Spanish speaking, the inhabitants are mainly white, with some hispanic mixture thrown in. Many of the descendants are from Spain, Italy, a small German influence ...

Colonia de Sacramento, uruguayan getaway.
Advantages: Relaxed atmosphere Disadvantages: Not much to do, picture postcard town
Colonia (Colonia de Sacramento) is a small colonial style town situated at the mouth of the River Plata in southern Uruguay. It was an important town as it was on the border between the Portuguese colony in the north that would become Brazil and the Spanish colony of the vice-royalty of the River Plata which would become Argentina. The strategic location on the river, which was important for transport and trade, means it was much fought over and ... ...a sleepy, well-preserved colonial town. Colonia is on the UNESCO World heritage list. Most people visit Colonia as part of a day trip from Buenos Aires (BA) in Argentina, which lies on the other side of the river mouth. Crossing is made by way of regular ferries and there is a slow service taking around 3 hours or a fast service taking about 1 hour. There are also frequent buses to Colonia from other Uruguayan destinations such as Montevideo and ...

A beautiful beach resort
Advantages: Lovely beaches, lots of big expensive looking buildings, Disadvantages: Relatively expensive living, can get very crowded in summer
...bigger than any hotel ive ever been in (though I dont really look at many). The other reviewers probably spent more time there, as tourists, in summer months - which is what Punta del Este is really for. A place definately worth visiting, if you go to Uruguay. ...

Uruguay or U-Ru-GUay
Advantages: Really nice museums to keep you engaged with the city Disadvantages: The constant meat you are meant to eat
...The capital city is Montevideo and it is also the most populated as well with over 1.5 million people living there. Weather ------------- In Uruguay they have weather very similar to our weather just not as wet. In January when I went to visit the weather was extremely warm and was hitting on average around 33c each day and in the evenings there was a much cooler breeze and temperatures dropped to around 16c. If you go later in the year around May ... ...------------------ I went to Montevideo in Uruguay in late January 2008 and was there for ten days. I had visited this country for one reason and it was to see where my grandmother used to live and explore the surroundings she had to deal with when growing up. I had to get a flight to Buenos Aires in Argentina and then have a flight from there to Montevideo and it was a flight which took 20 hours to complete but it was a nice journey on route with ...

you might like to visit it
Advantages: few Disadvantages: some
Montevideo is the capital city of Uruguay and gives hospitality to more or less the 50% of the inhabitants of the whole Uruguay.
Montevideo is a modern city that includes also the historic zone of the old city. All around the city there are many beaches with their white sands.
The old city, called "CIUDAD VIEJA", is scattered with buildings dated 18th century and includes also the market called "MERCADO DEL PUERTO".
"AVENIDA 18 DE JULIO" (18 July ... ...its parks and "Ramblas".
Montevideo is an array of old (18th century) and new (very modern skyscrapers) without many interests for those people that are looking for history, art and architecture. A full visit will take only two days.
As a counterbalance the beaches of Montevideo are very beautiful, clean and with an extension as far as the eye can see.
The inhabitants (most of them are of Italian origin) are friendly and polite. The city is safe ...
