Vail, Ski Resort

Vail, Ski Resort

Vail is about a 2 hour drive from Denver and is well worth a visit if you're in the area and loaded! (I was brought there on a work junket - otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford too much there.) The resort is huge with slopes running 6 miles across. All grades are catered for. I had ... Paradise but it doesnt come cheap

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: Expensive

Vail is about a 2 hour drive from Denver and is well worth a visit if you're in the area and loaded! (I was brought there on a work junket - otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford too much there.) The resort is huge with slopes running 6 miles across. All grades are catered for. I had never been ski-ing before, so was treated to a lesson, which with skis, boots and a day lift pass came to $159. (ouch!) The scenery is absolutely breath-taking, ...
...have a hearty breakfast before ascending as well - burger and chips cost $9! Hiring a ski-suit and gloves will cost you about $30 for a day. The apres-ski is excellent - stay in the Vail Cascades if you can - their leisure centre is second-to-none with everything laid on - jacuzzi, sauna, outdoor hot-tub, and all the towels and toiletries you need.  ... more

Great skiing at Vail

Advantages: Great terrain, views and atmosphere
Disadvantages: None really (v expensive though!)

Vail really is an incredible place to ski. I must have been there 4 or 5 times over the last 10 years or so and it just gets better each visit. There's a vast amount of on-mountain dining which is ideal for getting in that first refreshing drink of the morning! They've just opened up another mountainside at the back of the resort as well, behind the back bowls, adding another 600+ acres to the skiing area. Lift access is great with something like ...
...Lionshead area. Another great activity to indulge in is going on a Snow Mobile tour at night. You can hire them out from Adventure Ridge at the top of the Gondola and a guide takes you accross the mountain. The scenery is breathtaking. This is truly the best skiing resort in the world! ...

Whistler - Best ski resort I've been to.

Advantages: Friendly, informative, good snow, excellent skiing, cheap meals, quick moving queues
Disadvantages: long journey and price of flight, we had to get a bus to the lifts

I started going out with my boyfriend in Whistler, so I may be slightly biased! I went to Whistler a group of friends, we stayed in a chalet with a hot tub. This was my first time skiing out of Europe. I have been to several ski resorts in Europe and to Vail in Colorado but none of them compare with Whistler. There was fantastic snow, lovely light fluffy power and excellent off-piste and gladed routes, as well as fun parks, adding much more variety to the skiing. The people were fantastic, not like France where every one seems to want to push in lift queues. All the people were really laid back and friendly on the lifts. There were plenty of piste maps about on the slopes, so no need to worry when you have a bit of a fall and your map gets buried in a drift. The lifties went out of their way to help you if you asked them ...
