Vale do Lobo was the first development in the Algarve. It was founded in 1962 by Trusthouse Forte and at that time the Algarve was mainly inhabited by farmers and fishermen. It was only after the establishment of Vale do Lobo, its five star Meridien Hotel Dona Filipa and the first golf course, that Faro Airport was opened.
Vale do Lobo is just 20 mins drive from the airport, perfect for hitting your destination after only a 2 and a half hour flight from the UK!
The facilities and services are excellent – from an on-site bank, post office and supermarket, to the resort’s own medical centre and security service. Fine shops and restaurants, the largest tennis academy in Portugal, 2km of golden beach, not forgetting 2 championship golf courses – there’s no need to step outside the resort.
Choose from an apartment, a villa or stay at the expensive Dona Filipa. I've tried them all.
This is a very nice resort, particularly with the Praca at night (shops, bars, restaurnts etc.) and stands out in Portugal. Avoid Albufeira and Vilamoura unless you like the Blackpool type holiday, clammering from bar to br being hassled by timeshare reps...you know the type.
Vale do Lobo attracts a better type of holiday-maker, hence the prices. The beach is fantastic, the best on the Algarve.
Prefer Quinta do Lago, the resort next door. Bit quieter but classier - the likes of Madonna and Michael Owen reside there during some summer months!
