Very Naughty Nuts!!!

Advantages: Unique world heritage site, species found nowhere else on Earth, love nuts in their natural environment, Garden of Eden???
Disadvantages: Gaggles of European tourists

made into a nature reserve and gradually rehabilitated. When I visited here I was taking a break from a work placement on Mahe, which is a pretty laid back island. Praslin in comparison is fast asleep, and yet when I entered the Vallee de Mai, I was taken back by the sudden peacefulness. There was dead silence, the air was still and absolute serenity. Indeed, I walked for a good half hour before I came across another human being, with only a few babbling brooks interrupting the silence. There are several paths through the jungle-like valley. I started with the circular path which takes around 2 hours, and was certainly my favourite, as it included traversing several streams, which are the source of drinking water for most of the island, passing giant granite boulders and a climb up to a shelter which gave a wonderful view over the valley ...

Minsmere Nature Reserve

Advantages: Lots of wildlife, good facilities for the disabled
Disadvantages: Admission charges

Minsmere is one of over 200 nature reserves in Britain managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Established in 1948 it is also one of Britain's oldest nature reserves. Back in those early post war days it was known as the Minsmere Bird Reserve and covered only a fraction of the 150 acres that it now spans. Today, Minsmere Nature Reserve covers the whole of east Suffolk from the estuary of the River Blyth to its north down to Minsmere River on its southern boundaries, this area now also forms a part of the much larger Minsmere - Walberswick Special Protection area and is also an area of outstanding natural beauty. In addition to its birdlife, it is also an important habitat for flowers, plants, insects and mammals. In September 2004 a previously unknown species of moth was found here, which was given the name ...

Blackburn Meadows Nature Reserve

Advantages: A Haven For Wildlife, Educational For Local Schoolchildren
Disadvantages: Industrial Location, Some Vandalism

on it but the subsidence created by the open cast removal of the Coal deposits had lowered the level of this land even further. Vegetation had begun to establish itself but it was the creation of the Tinsley Sewage Works that was to provide the catalyst and create the most remarkable change to this area, transforming it from an Industrial wasteland to the Wildlife haven that it is today. The Sewage lagoons attracted huge numbers of migrating and wading birds that stopped off here to feed on the vast numbers of insects that the sewage began to attract. Once this trend of visiting birds had been realised the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust stepped in to try and get this area designated as a local Nature Reserve and their applications were granted. Blackburn Meadows is now managed by a consortium that includes the Sheffield and Yorkshire Wildlife ...
