The Elsecar Heritage Centre, South Yorkshire

Advantages: Free, Lots Of History
Disadvantages: Admission Charges For Some Exhibits

the near future. As well as the permanent displays that can be found here there are also several temporary exhibitions which include Vintage Car Shows and Garden displays. The Elsecar Heritage Centre is free to visit and is well worthy of a visit if you are interested in the local history of the area. Whilst there are obvious Museum style items such as fully restored Steam Locomotive Engines in the Steam Railways section, one such example even occupies the main Courtyard, there are more unusual features to be found here to. I was particularly fascinated by the Victorian Classroom which is a replica of how a typical local School Classroom would have looked in the 1880's. Fortunately this was open during my visit and it was possible to wander around the old fashioned wooden desks and chairs, but when my Parents visited here this room was ...

Down on the farm

Advantages: Lots to do and see
Disadvantages: Can be a boring if the weather isn't good

Almond Valley Heritage Centre is a working Farm in West Lothian. Many people know it as Livingston Mill! To get there you take Junction 3 off the M8 and follow the signs for Almond Valley. It is roughly 15 miles from Edinburgh and about 30 miles from Glasgow. Almond Valley is open every day apart from 25/26 December and 1/2 January. The opening times are 10am - 5pm. The admission charges are £3 for an adult and children aged 3-16 years at £2! Family tickets are available from £10. Educational, community and caring groups can apply for a years membership, which costs £10 and then admission costs from £1 per person. Groups who are going can prebook and get a generous discount and also book trailer rides round the farm and also the train if it is on at that point. Parties can also be held here at a cost of £5.50 per child ...

Sheffield's Secret Museum

Advantages: a fascinating insight into the past
Disadvantages: limited opening times, difficult to park

I thought that I knew about all of the Museums in my home City of Sheffield so I was recently surprised to hear about The Traditional Heritage Museum for the very first time. This Museum is located within a former Church building on Eccleshall Road, about half a mile outside the City Centre. It has often been referred to as "Sheffield's Secret Museum" and since I had never heard of it until a couple of weeks ago I guess that this name is rather appropriate. This Museum houses a fascinating collection of artefacts from everyday life that have been collected over the last fifty years. The main theme of the collections is to recreate the City as it would have looked between 1850 and 1950. This has been done by reconstructing original shop fronts and fitting them out with typical equipment from that period. There are some well ...
