Valley of Kings, Egypt

Valley of Kings, Egypt

Salaam, hi and hello! When we were in Luxor in Upper Egypt 28 years ago, we crossed the Nile by ferryboat to get to the West bank (called Thebes by the ancient Greeks) from where a bus took us to the Valley of the Kings. This isnīt done any more, a bridge was built 7 km downstream 10 years ... Read review

One Day In The Hereafter

Advantages: unique in the world
Disadvantages: none

...bus took us to the Valley of the Kings. This isnīt done any more, a bridge was built 7 km downstream 10 years ago and now itīs a bus ride all the way.

A bridge, what else is new? Luxor had 30 000 inhabitants when we were there in 1975, now it has 350 000. (Later in Cairo, a man told us that Luxor was a mere village; seen from Africaīs biggest city with an assumed population of 18 to 20 million [nobody knows the precise number] this ...
...guard the entrance of the Valley of the Kings, one of UNESCOīs cultural heritage sites, but they used to guard the entrance of a temple which has now disappeared. Ancient Greek travellers (tourism is an old phenomenon in Egypt!) believed the statues resembled their God of the Dawn, Memnon. At sunrise the northern statue would emit a haunting musical sound, according to the Greeks it was Memnon greeting his mother; modern prosaic people claim the ... more

The Valley of the Kings

Advantages: a real piece of history
Disadvantages: not much there except the tombs

We went to the Valley of the kings whilst on a day trip to Luxor. On entering the valley of the kings i was surprised to see that there were just rocks and hills and some passages leading into the tombs, i had i suppose expected there to be perhaps a museum walkthough or more information about the valley of the kings. We had a guide and i think it is best to go as a part of a day trip as our guide told us which were the best tombs to go in. We went ...
...didn't go into the tomb of Tutan Kharmon as there is nothing in there and yet this is probably the most famous of the tombs. All of Tutankhamun's finds were in the museum at Cairo. You can pay for 3 tombs and we found this the best option which was 55 L.E.(Ģ5.50) As i say i would always recommend going on an organised trip with a guide. Ours was very good and explained alot of the history which we wouldn't have known if we had gone on our own. The ...

Valley of the KIngs

Advantages: Amazing tombs
Disadvantages: Far too hot for comfort

We arrived at 8am in october and it was already up to 40 degrees celcius which i found was far too hot to cope with. Be wary of taking young children as though there is sum shade, it is not easy to find and you have to stand in the sun for very lond periods of time. The tombs were amazing, a once in a lifetime experience and entry entitles you to visit 3 of them. Tutankhamuns temple is an extra cost, an many people advised us that it was not worth ...
...are actually astonishing- you really have to see them to believe them...amazing to think they were done so long ago! There was no hassle from salespeople once you were inside =, but the entrance is convered with them, Young women need to be very wary of the men as they try to take advantage and will grab hold of you- my advice is to go with a man and wear a wedding ring, though this is still not 100% effective. Otherwise just cover up modestly to ...

Valley of the kings- not to be missed

Advantages: amazing access and fantastic amount of history and culture
Disadvantages: 50oc in summer is a little too hot for a long day

I first visited Egypt last summer (2005) with my partner. We chose to stay in the Hurghada resort for two weeks in june. on the coast the temperature was between 30-35oc. We were planning on spending two nights in cairo looking at the pyraminds however we spoke to our tour guide who reccommended a five hour coach journey to Luxor instead. Our first reaction was to dismiss it as five hours each way is a very long day in the summer heat but our guide was very enthusiatic about Luxor and in particular Valley of the kings so we gave it a go. Our morning call was at 4am but suprisingly the journey did not seem that longand in fact I found it really interesting after travelling through the desert we drove along the Nile and through villages where children and their parents were working or playing in the fields or waving estacically ...

A completely different experience

Advantages: Really interesting, like nothing I have ever seen before
Disadvantages: Too hot!!

One of the places we visited in during our stay in Luxor was the Valley of the Kings and Queens on the west bank. We had got prices from many of the different travel agents (most quoted around Ģ19pp). We were talking to a guy in our hotel who was selling balloon trips and he told us that his friend did private tours for Ģ25pp (these prices included transport, tour guide and enterance into the attractions). Although it was slightly more expensive we decided we liked this option better as we would be able to go at our own pace and not have to be rushed or wait on other tourists. They picked us up outside our hotel at 7:30am in a small air-conditioned minibus. It didn't take very long to get there probably half an hour at the most but time went by very quickly as the tour guide was telling us alot of interesting facts and all about history ...

A relaxing place to do some exploring

Advantages: Get to learn alot
Disadvantages: Not much nightlife

Luxor is a brilliant place to relax and to get the chance to see ancient archieology and also to learn a thing or two! If you have always wanted to go to Egypt, then go to Luxor. There is alot to do and alot to learn. I went in Nov 07 and had a brilliant time. We stayed in a 5 star hotel for 2 weeks, which was situated right on the River Nile! We could dip our feet in the River Nile without leaving our hotel! How amazing. Attractions In Luxor The Valley of the Kings and The Valley of the Queens were definately the highlights of the trip. This is where explorers found all the tombs of the ancient kings and queens of Egypt. Each tomb would tell a story of how the royal had lived as they would be buried with their valuables and stories. Some of the tombs had traps to defer thieves from gettin into them, and in alot of cases these ...
