. It sits down below the level of the railway and motorway so any noise tends to pass over it. The trains, though frequent, are fairly quiet. All the rooms are double-glazed (and air-conditioned) so you can keep the windows closed and not hear a thing. There is a Chinese-style garden at one side, full of shrubbery, ponds, paths, little bridges and gazebos where no noise seems to impinge at all.

It is part of the VanderValk chain (da-da-da-DUM for those of you who remember the eponymous 1970s Dutch detective series; for those of you who don't, you didn't miss anything). I feel a shudder running through those of you who dislike hotel chains. When you mention the words prog rock to people they normally think of Genesis or Yes or ELP all of these were terrible bands that inspired the first wave of punk on both sides of the Atlantic. Very few people will think of VanDer Graaf Generator, a great band that inspired a young John Lydon.
To those people who have heard of VDGG there are two reactions either one of casual dismissing them as having any merit at all, or wide eyed glee at finding another fan of the only prog rock band not to have a lead guitarist, in fact the classic four piece line up of Peter Hammill (Vocals, Piano, Guitar), Hugh Banton (Organs), David Jackson (Saxes, Flute) and Gut Evans (Drums) ignored the rock and roll rule book, No Lead Guitarist for one and a sax player that was off his head.
