. It sits down below the level of the railway and motorway so any noise tends to pass over it. The trains, though frequent, are fairly quiet. All the rooms are double-glazed (and air-conditioned) so you can keep the windows closed and not hear a thing. There is a Chinese-style garden at one side, full of shrubbery, ponds, paths, little bridges and gazebos where no noise seems to impinge at all.

It is part of the VanderValk chain (da-da-da-DUM for those of you who remember the eponymous 1970s Dutch detective series; for those of you who don't, you didn't miss anything). I feel a shudder running through those of you who dislike hotel chains. Agreed they can be soulless and you can feel processed, but equally I have often been disappointed in attractive-looking independent hotels, not usually by the public rooms ...

As we sat in the car getting lost on the way to the hotel, my colleague Karin entertained me with horror stories about the hotel we were about to visit. Firstly she told me it was 'the one with the big bird outside' which sounded pretty ominous. My mind was filled with Sesame Street images. Next she said that the sales guys from her office claimed the hotel was 'full of prostitutes' especially during trade-shows (we had just been to a trade show of course). Another colleague had allegedly turned up late when all the normal rooms were taken and been given a jungle-themed room with a four-poster bed and plastic palm trees. Apparently that room was normally rented 'by the hour' and the porn channels were second to none (hence the massive 42 inch flat screen TVs). The hotel is located in the centre of The Hague, near a busy road, lots of shops, restaurants and bars. Perfect for couples, families wanting to be close to the action. Ideal as a base for sightseeing, near old grote church, dutch parliament, ancient buiildings, galleries, tram and bus stops. You may want to request a room on other side of hotel away from road if you are a light sleeper.
