It was a Sunday and the gallery had a family day when there we lots of opportunities for kids to create art of their own. This made the place pretty crowded. My intention was to visit the gallery to discover the Group of Seven. One might think that VancouverArt Gallery was really family friendly. However, as a single person observing these families I would say the opposite. A lot of the modern art exhibits were not roped off adequately. Therefore, confronted with modern sculptures, naturally kids used to interactive exhibits at science centres, zoos and museums jumped right in, only to be yelled at by scowling security staff and curators. The irony of modern art 'for the masses'. One of the exhibits was a giant sandcastle! Even my husband was told off for loitering-he leaned against a wall, bored, waiting for me.
