Dolphin delight
Advantages: Educational, great place to get away from the bustle of everyday life Disadvantages: Plenty of opportunity to part with your cash- photos, gifts, fast food
...get your entry tickets from Vancouver Tourism as they are discounted. There are lots of both indoor and outdoor areas with hands on exhibits where you can touch sea creatures such as urchins and sea stars (starfish). The beluga whale and dolphin shows were amazing. Yes, these mammals belong in the sea but the dolphins featured had been rescued with severe damage to their fins. I learned a lot from the dolphin displays about their behaviour. We visited ...

Gastown letdown
Advantages: Ineresting old buildings, historical background of city Disadvantages: dirty, rubbish, unsafe atmosphere
Spent a few days in Vancouver and had set aside a day to wander the 'old town.' All guide books raved about this area. We like historical areas but we were rather disappointed. My advice is to seek a walking tour map and stick to it. One block off the beaten track and one feels very unsafe. Even in Gastown itself the streets seem to hold more than their fair share of homeless people, drunks and addicts. The streets are dirty with strewn rubbish. ... ...keeping uptown clean. Note that the Storyeum was closed in June this year and unlikely to re-open for a while. The best bit was the steam clock and there is a great little Starbucks on the corner of Water Street. But I would not recommend going further than that unless you are a really hardened independent traveller. ...

Mixed messages to families
Advantages: Lots to see- worth it for Emily Carr pieces Disadvantages: Unfriendly atmosphere- classics on top floor
...Seven. One might think that Vancouver Art Gallery was really family friendly. However, as a single person observing these families I would say the opposite. A lot of the modern art exhibits were not roped off adequately. Therefore, confronted with modern sculptures, naturally kids used to interactive exhibits at science centres, zoos and museums jumped right in, only to be yelled at by scowling security staff and curators. The irony of modern art ...

Capilano suspension bridge - Bridge of dreams
Advantages: Lots to see and do - Fascinating story Disadvantages: might be seen as pricy
...take a trip to the Capilano suspension bridge - I do have to say that I feel it is somewhat over priced (after all the scenery is free - and all around you) but I guess you are paying for all the research and the money - some of it does go back into local native projects and it is a good day out especially if you have Kids.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable day here just being tourists. Sometimes people who live in an area forget that visitors do not ... ...poles on the grounds at Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park. These colourful poles are maintained in the exact condition in which they were received and are on display in the Totem park. First Nations carvers at Capilano Suspension Bridge work on-site in the Big House and tell visitors about their techniques, skills and heritage. The colourful Totem Park displays over 25 authentic totem poles collected since the 1930's and life-size red cedar statues ...

Top of the World! (well, Vancouver)
Advantages: Stunning views over Vancouver, great scenic walks Disadvantages: A bit expensive, views vary according to weather
...the city by going up Grouse Mountain? Just 15 minutes from the city centre, the unassuming entrance gives no clue as to the spectacular views ahead, with the peak of the mountain (4,100 feet) still out of sight. The admission charge is currently $29.95 (Candian dollars) for adults which works out roughly at about £15, while children between the ages of 5-12 are $10.95 and 12-18s get in for $16.95. There's also a small charge for parking.
Before ... ...gift-shop selling all sorts of Grouse Mountain souvenirs as well as your standard Canadian merchandise (maple syrup, cuddly bears, native Canadian crafts). In this building is surely the most welcoming log fire ever, but it may be wise to leave it until last and get out in the great outdoors first!
There's some impressive wood carvings (eagles, ospreys, bears) lining the many paths of the mountain, and boy are there some paths! If you like your ...
