A visit to Varna was one of the highlights of my holiday in Bulgaria this summer. There's something for everyone. For the young there is a Dolphinarium, which, unfortuneately I didn't find time to visit. Between the Dolphinarium and the town centre are the Sea Gardens. These gardens contain a 'Monument to Fighters Against Fascism' (they lost), a long tree lined avenue with wide, well tended flower beds down the middle and busts of figures from Bulgarias ... ...museum.
The shoping area itself is mainly along one straight road from the Sea Gardens to the Cathedral of the Assumption. Goods in the shops are reasonably priced but more expensive than other parts of Bulgaria (with the exception of Sofia). The only problem we had was that an English guy who runs anestate agents in the town warned us that a pick pocket was closing in. So do as we did and keep valuables well hidden.

At lunck time we were spoiled for choice, with everything from a McDonalds to local eateries. We ended up in an English pub without realising until we sat down and noticed puictures of red phone boxes etc. on the wall. The food was cheap with a meal and drinks for two costing little over £5. The food and service were excellent, I tried a local rissotto type dish and loved it. We did have to pay the equivalent op10p to use the toilets, this is the only form of wages for the attendant, they were the nicest, cleanest toilets I have ever seen in a pub.
The highlight of my day was a visit to the Cathedral of the Assumption. it is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and every inch of the walls and ceiling were painted with the most beautiful icons of Saints and scenes depicting events from The Bible. My husband, who really isn't interested in art or churches, walked through the door and was awesrtuck by the beauty of this place. We also visited one of the smaller Chapels which was in stark contrast to this, with dull pictures and flaking paint.
