Advantages: Profound and entertaining, what more does one want?! Disadvantages: none
I know nothing about Greek literature, so when I looked for adequate reading matter for our hols on Crete I turned to google and found NikosKazantzakis? ?Zorba the Greek?. Ah, yes, suddenly the wonderful film from 1964 came back to my mind, older readers may recall Anthony Quinn in the role of Zorba. I didn?t know that the film was made after NikosKazantzakis? novel, in fact I didn?t know anything about the author at all, now I?ve learnt that the author is not only the most famous Cretan author but he is the most written about and most translated Greek author of modern times, an internationally acclaimed novelist, dramatist, poet and journalist; he narrowly missed out on the Nobel Prize for literature by one vote in 1956.
(from the net) ?Kazantzakis was born in Heraklion, the capital of Crete, in 1883. He studied law in Athens ...
Advantages: Amazing views of Rethymnon and the surrounding area, fantastic historical site. Disadvantages: Can become very hot so dont recommend a midday trip!
The Venetian Fortezza sits high up in Rethymnon and can be seen from all over the town. Its height means once you are there you have the most amazing views of the town and surrounding area.
It also stands tall over the harbour and you can watch the many boats coming and going and admire the famous lighthouse.
One in the Fortezza you can wander around the baron landscape and really get a feel for what it would have been like all those years ago. There is little shade so i advise a trip in cooler weather as it can become unbearable in the midday heat.
In the centre of the Fortezza there is the smallest chapel i have ever seen and you can go in but only 2 at a time!!! It is amazing to see!
There is a good gift shop and plenty of information if you want to delve into the fantastic history that comes with the ruin.
Well worth ...
Advantages: better than we expected, clean arrival facilities, wasnt too crowded on arrival, nice location, useful staff, shops, airconditioning Disadvantages: departure lounge, toilets in departures, lack of seating during busy times

After reading nothing but extremely negative reviews about Heraklion airport we were becoming increasingly anxious as our plane started to decent onto the Greek island of Crete!
We had read about long delays, lack of or broken air-conditioning, cramped, dirty and overcrowded baggage claim areas and many other complaints.
The airport is situated right by the sea and in the capital of Crete (Heraklion). As we landed I was surprised that the airport was actually of a reasonable size, there was nothing fancy about the outside of the building but at least it didn't look dilapidated!!
As we got off the plane via a set of steps we were immediately guided into a bus, which fortunately wasn't too crowded as there were other passengers waiting for the next one. After just a minute ...
