Traviso is used by Ryanair, I would not rule this one out if the price is right but Marco Polo scores higher on the Romantic Arrival feeling.

Traviso is used by Ryanair, I would not rule this one out if the price is right but Marco Polo scores higher on the Romantic Arrival feeling.
First if flying into Marco Polo if possible get a Window Seat on the right hand side of the Plane facing direction of Travel.
If you get this and it is a clear day you will get a Glorious View of Not only the Island of Venice but also the other islands in the lagoon Marano and Burano and Torchelli as you make your approch to Marco Polo.
You will think you are going to land in the Sea but do not worry the Runway appears just in time.
It is quite a nice Airport and the journey thru Passport Control and Baggage reclaim is usually quite smooth. Toilet facilities are quite good. Ladies if there seems a Queue on the entrance in Baggage Control just go outside there is an entrance to toilets just the other side and normally no queue.
Now you have your bags what are the options if staying in Venice Itself, please do not try and save a few Euros by staying on the Lido, it is not as romantic and the time and cost of then Travelling into Venice will far exceed what you have Saved.

The cheapest option is to take the Local Bus which stops just outside departures to Piazza Roma Bus Station in Venice, this is at the end of the Grand Canal this costs about 2 Euros, tickets can be purchased at the Bus Booth inside arrivals.
When you arrive at Piazza Roma you may see a Guy in a Sailors Hat DIRECTING you to the Water Bus, do not be taken in , he means WATER TAXI a quite different beast from a WATER BUS.
Follow the signs to the Water Bus if that is what you want. At this point it is worth deciding what ticket you want , there are several options. A single Trip that includes the Grand Canal is about 5 Euros.
We usually buy the 72 Hour ticket a fair better bargain. For uptodate prices check the Venice Web Site. This 72 hours starts from when you validate your ticket on boarding your first Water Bus. If you have a large case there is a seperate ticket required.
The 72 hour ticket is valid for all journies including the Grand Canal and more important to the Islands Morano, Burano Torchelli Etc.
At this point a warning. At Hotels of other places you may be offered a FREE TRIP TO MORANO by FAST WATER TAXI. Yes they will take you to Morano but when you arrive you will be taken in the Back Door of one of the Glass Factories (who have paid for the trip). You will be shown a short demo of glass making then to the Shop where you will be expected to buy. then back out of the BACK DOOR and back to Venice, WAS THAT MORANO you will ask yourself.
Instead use your 72 hour ticket then you can explore as many Glass works as you wish and also the Island.
Burano is a smaller island where the speciality is Lace. We feel it is a prettier place with Brightly Painted Houses and many Restaurants to have a leisurely lunch.
Back to options on Transfer, I have digressed a bit.
The 2nd and 3rd Options are by water.
You can either walk to the QUAY about a 10 minute walk by covered walk way. Or there is a free bus to the quay that runs about every 15 mins.
At the quay there is a Water Bus (Tickets can be purchased at a booth in arrivals) 10 Euros one way. This Journey can take about 1 hour as it calls at Morano and lido on the way. It arrives just in front and to the right of St Marks Square.
Also at the Quay are the Sleek Water Taxis, these are the fastest way of transfer about 20 mins. Quite expensive if just two of you.
Best booked in advance, there are a couple of web sites.
For 10 people 130 Euros so if you can get a gang together not such a bad deal.
See above site for other prices.
The advantage of the Water Taxi is that it may be able to get you closer to your hotel, although there may be a suppliment for Hotels on the Popular Canals.
Once in Venice just enjoy and plan your return trip, remember on a water based system things move slower so allow time to get to check in in time.
The airport does have reasonable shops and eateries but mainly before you go thru to the gates,
I almost forgot the Traviso Airport transfer details, as it is on mainland the two Options are a Taxi or the Ryanair Bus which takes you to Piazza Roma. Not so Romantic but about 40 mins on the Bus.
Advantages: Very inviting and clean Disadvantages: Busy
My experience at Venice airport was very smooth, the buses to and from the terminals were excellent, and there was absolutely no hassle whatsoever. The baggage reclaim and passport control was smooth and when we left, we were greeted by fountains and flowers that were very pleasing to the eye, unmatched by other airports i have been to.
Outside the airport, taxis were easily available as well as other forms of transport and within five minutes of ... ...every mile or so.
Venice itself was a very nice place with bagfuls of character and some charming squares and pizzerias that will stay with me for a long time.
The trip was made complete by having no stress at all and i thank Venice airport for that and i would thoroughly reccomend it to all those visiting northern italy. ...

I recently went to Venice airport and was very impressed. Unfortunately all flights use bussing, but this was quick and well organised, and resulted in only about 50 paces being needed to get through customs and our of the airport. car hire is nearby, as are boats or taxi boats to the city. The airport can be full of tourists as i found on my return, though is still quite spacious. the departure lounge was fine, and as most flights are domestic, ...
