PIAZZA SAN MARCO LIKE A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.

Advantages: History Beauty and Style
Disadvantages: No Free Seats

PIAZZA SAN MARCO. is like falling in love with a Beautiful Woman, when with her you can not stay long enough, when away you can not wait to return to her. You may speak to people who have only visited her on a Day trip, they will probably have not been impressed. They will only have seen her in the company of thousands. To see the Piazza at its best and Romantic you must Visit her late at night with your wife, husband, lover or just a friend. The ...
...really highlights the shape of the square. When you enter from the Grand Canal DO NOT WALK BETWEEN the two columns, in the past you only passed between when being sent for execution. The Doges Palace is on your right, this is well worth a Tour, get there early to beat the queues. (Day Trippers normally decend on Venice about 09:45). Beautiful rooms and full of history. On this trip you cross over the Bridge of sighs to visit the prison. Further ...

Cruisin' - THE GRAND CANAL

Advantages: An amazing sight
Disadvantages: Venice is SO expensive

...the said waterway. The Grand Canal (to give it it's English name), is one of the first things most visitors see when they arrive in the city, leading as it does, from the lagoon at Santa Lucia Railway station and the huge, and hugely expensive, car parks. It snakes through the city in a giant back-to-front S shape from here to the St Mark Basin at the opposite end of town. At 3800m long and varying widths of between 30-90m, it's said to be one ...
...most familiar views on the Grand Canal and dates from 1588 (just a year before the water bus set out). The Rialto is pretty impressive and even the masses of tourists don't quite manage to spoil it (no matter how hard they try with litter and half-eaten foodstuffs). There has been a bridge here for centuries linking the two commercial districts of the city and i think it's been centuries since the streets around it were cleaned! Still fantastically ...

Church of Santa Maria Dela Salute

Advantages: Away from the Tourist Hoards of St Marks.
Disadvantages: None

...which is the Church of Santa Maria Della Salute, I am afraid I did not take any photos this year as the main dome is covered in scaffolding, in fact there seemed to be more buildings this year that were being worked on. This is not a critism of Venice, by its nature restortaion work is a necessity. It was on 22 October 1630 that the Senate of Venice decided to build a Church to Honour the Madonna to mark the end of the Plague which had devestated ...
...1st 1631, what a change from here where it seems to take Years, ref Wembly, Terminal 5 etc etc. It was the plan of 32 year old Baldassare Longhena that was accepted, it was to be his first major commission. Longhena's project was revolutionary, as he was the first to acknowlege. The effect was striking in that his huge octagonal construction , covered with Istrian Stone and crowned with two domes and flanked by a pair of Campaniles rose out of ...

VENICE AIRPORT SIT ON RIGHT SIDE OF PLANE

Advantages: The view as you arrive.
Disadvantages: The view as you depart.

...Not only the Island of Venice but also the other islands in the lagoon Marano and Burano and Torchelli as you make your approch to Marco Polo. You will think you are going to land in the Sea but do not worry the Runway appears just in time. It is quite a nice Airport and the journey thru Passport Control and Baggage reclaim is usually quite smooth. Toilet facilities are quite good. Ladies if there seems a Queue on the entrance in Baggage Control ...
...the options if staying in Venice Itself, please do not try and save a few Euros by staying on the Lido, it is not as romantic and the time and cost of then Travelling into Venice will far exceed what you have Saved. Please see my review on hotel Colombina for Locanda Remedio where we normally stay, a little gem. The cheapest option is to take the Local Bus which stops just outside departures to Piazza Roma Bus Station in Venice, this is at the ...

Seeing inside this beauty

Advantages: A tour in time.
Disadvantages: High but I suffer from Vertigo and managed.

...dell'Orologio (the clock tower in St Mark's Square) had been under wraps while being cleaned. Each year a different picture covered it (Empire State, Eifel Tower etc). In 2008 it was uncovered and we found that tours were available, but alass they were fully booked during our time in Venice. So this year I set out to make sure we got inside for a look see. Following a link on www.veniceconnected.com I booked 4 places on the English Language Tour ...
...at the opposite end of St Marks square on the day of the visit and at least 15 mins prior to the tour. The guide actually picks you up at the Museme Ticket office. Our party only consisted of us 4, so we had the guide all to ourselves. She walks you thru St Marks Square to the Clock tower, entry is thru a locked tiny door to the side. On the first level, you are given the history of the clock, diagrams on the walls, also at this level you can ...
