Seeing inside this beauty
Advantages: A tour in time. Disadvantages: High but I suffer from Vertigo and managed.
...dell'Orologio (the clock tower in St Mark's Square) had been under wraps while being cleaned. Each year a different picture covered it (Empire State, Eifel Tower etc).
In 2008 it was uncovered and we found that tours were available, but alass they were fully booked during our time in Venice.
So this year I set out to make sure we got inside for a look see. Following a link on www.veniceconnected.com I booked 4 places on the English Language Tour ... ...at the opposite end of St Marks square on the day of the visit and at least 15 mins prior to the tour.
The guide actually picks you up at the Museme Ticket office.
Our party only consisted of us 4, so we had the guide all to ourselves.
She walks you thru St Marks Square to the Clock tower, entry is thru a locked tiny door to the side.
On the first level, you are given the history of the clock, diagrams on the walls, also at this level you can ...

Basilica di San Marco
Advantages: Beautiful Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...view over-looking the rest of Saint Mark's Square must have been fantastic. If I find myself in Venice again (and I hope I will), I will be coming back here, and this time I will go up and have a look. From the outside looking up, you can see four bronze horses over-looking the square. The original horses are now in the museum (which is also inside the basilica, but I didn't find this either!), but the replicas are up here on the balcony, so I guess ... ...One of the most amazing things about the inside of the basilica is the atmosphere. Even if you are not a religious person, I guaurantee you will be awestruck by everything you will see. One thing that really struck me about the inside was the amount of space. It is enormous and wide, but the domes are so high up, it all makes for one truly colossal vessel. There are candles dotted around that create a quiet atmosphere.
I would recomment this to ...

A Wonderful Experience
Advantages: Beautiful Architecture, The atmosphere, plenty to see! Disadvantages: None that I can think of
I found the Doges Palace to be an exceptional experience and I definitely recommend a visit to everyone who is visiting Venice. It is incredibly easy to find, to the side of the main St. Marks Square, next to The Basilica.
Included in the price of a ticket is entrance into the museum, where some of the original pillars can be found on display, each room in the museum features numerous guide sheets in different languages so you can learn about the ... ...museum, you find yourself in the main courtyard. The architecture is stunning. I spent a good while just wandering around in the courtyard looking at all the detail on the statues and buildings as I was in absolute awe of how beautiful it all was. After exploring everything in the courtyard I headed to the second floor, where I found myself going up the "golden staircase", which will take your breath away... never before have I seen something as ...

Gallerie dell'Accademia
Advantages: A very improtant collection Disadvantages: Honestly? A little dull at times
I visited this place on my recent trip to Venice. For those of you who have been to the National Gallery in London, this place seems to be the Venetian equivalent; full of old masterpieces and religious art. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and whilst I appreciated the work I saw and admired its beauty, it is not the sort of thing that usually interests me. I am glad I saw it, as it is an important collection of work, but I found it difficult to get ... ...Euros, and the gallery is open from 8.15am until 7.15pm daily. It is open on most days but is closed on: 1sr Jan, 25th April, 1st May and 25th Dec. You can take small bags in with you, and there are lockers at the entrance where you can leave larger bags, as they are not allowed. Just ask someone at the desk if you are unsure.
You can get to the gallery on foot (if you have a good sense of direction!), or you can fo what we did and take the water ...

art fans?
Advantages: Great collection of surrealist and cubist works Disadvantages: Can get very hot and crowded
...a useful experience. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection sits on the Grand Canal in Venice and is home to a collection of Cubist, Abstract and Surrealist works. I think it was about five euros to get in (maybe ten, I don't remember), and this gives you access to the inside gallery and the sculpture garden.
The building itself (Peggy Guggenheim's old home) is quite strange; very long and wide with only a basement and a ground floor. This, along with ... ...never been to any other Guggenheim museums (there is one in Spain, one in Berlin and two in Manhattan, together forming the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation), but having seen this one I think I would like to if I had the chance. If you have no interest whatsoever in art, then to be honest, you won't find this interesting, and it's not a place I would suggest visiting with the kids on a family holiday, but I would recommend visiting to any art fans, ...
