I´ve been dreaming of a visit to this city for at least 15 years or so. Then suddenly I got the chance to go there for a weekend trip in September 2000. My wife organised the trip as a birthday present and we got there by plane.
We arrived at “Aeroporto Marco Polo” and had to reach the city by motorboat. The transfer lasted nearly one hour but the weather was very fine and so we enjoyed the wonderful views out over the lagoon.
The hotel “Cavaletto & Doge Orseolo” is situated right by the side of “Piazza San Marco”. It´s a quite comfortable hotel that has its own landing-stage for gondolas. In the morning you can look through the windows of the breakfast-room on the gondolieri who prepare their gondolas and themselves for a new day.
In the evening we had a drink at the „Florian“, one of the oldest cafés in the world. It was very romantic sitting there and listening to the music of an classical string quintet. Unfortunately it was very expensive, too.
Tip: If you like to go out for lunch or dinner, it is very easy to find nice little restaurants and reasonable prices by avoiding the main tourist attractions.
The next day after breakfast we visited the Campanile and took a lot of photos of the city. Then we had several looks at the “Basilica San Marco”. You can´t imagine the wonderful mosaics on the floor.
After that we took a round trip via “Vaporetto” (motorboats that substitute the busses) beginning at “Piazza San Marco”, “Canale della Guidecca” and finally “Canale Grande” back to “Piazza San Marco”. We were back after one and a half hour and looked at many the ancient churchs and “Palazzi”.
In the afternoon we made a little trip to “Murano”, the island that is well known all over the world for its fantastic glass articles. There are many shops and you can watch the glassblowers at work.
After returning to our hotel my wife bought two leather bags. She decided to keep one herself and to give the other one to her mother.
You can catch the real magic of Venice in the evening when many of the tourists are gone and the sun is beginning to disappear from heaven, or when you´re walking through the tiny little streets by night.
I really love this city and I hope to return back there asap.
