BREAD & WINE in VENICE

Advantages: Local good food and wine.
Disadvantages: Only went one night.

We had been in Venice for a three night stay. The first two nights we had eaten at Da Sandro which my sister-in-law will be doing a review on. Our problem was Da Sandro does not open on a Friday, so for our last night we needed to find somewhere else, and you do not want a bad experience on your last night do you. We had just spent a pleasant 75 mins at a Jazz Session in the prison attached to the Doges Palace. From there we wandered to BAR MARCA ...
...Realto Marcardo Vaperroto stop and you can not miss it. Here we joined the throng of humanity who know of this Hole in The Wall bar, Fritz, Campari and Soda or excellent range of wines all about 2 euros a glass. NOW WHERE WE EAT I hear from the other three Fountains. Trust my nose I say. So we wander, at this point I apologise I did not get the Address, but I am sure if you ask a local they will point the way. After leaving BAR MARCA with the ...

Pizzas to beat the credit Crunch in Venice

Advantages: Beats the CREDIT CRUNCH
Disadvantages: Cant go every week.

As the exchange rate Pond v Euro is very poor at the moment in fact last week it was almost one to one, we were a little more careful than usual in selecting places to Eat on our Venice trip. This one fits the bill very well, even at 1 euro to the pound. It is located in the San Palo area of venice, not far from Da Sandro Restaurant which I reviewed after last years trip. Cross Rialto Bridge, you pass down past the TOURIST TACK Cabins, when you ...
...shopping street. About 100 yards down keep looking down the small streets to the right and you will see ANTICO PANIFICO. As I was in charge this lunch time, I had been scanning Menus, I looked for the Magareta Pizza price as a quick guide, most had been about 8 or 9 Euros even 12 near St Marks, so when this one showed at 5.5 Euros there was no decision to make, we four Fontanas entered the Place. It is an extremley clean establishment, there is ...

Trattoria alla Nuova Speranza, Venice

Advantages: Happy, friendly and very welcoming.
Disadvantages: Food not too hot when arrieved at the table.

Trattoria alla Nuova Speranza, can be found by walking to the Arsenale area of Venice Island. We had almost give up finding anywhere to eat in the area we had ventured off the main drag, boulevard Garibaldi which was once a canal but has now been covered over to make the widest street on Venice Island. One of my favourite dishes is spaghetti opa, which is plain cooked spaghetti tossed in oil, garlic, chillies and parsley. This dish which I have ...
...so when we found the Trattoria and it was on the menu I thought great. The trattoria is small and a little dark on the inside, had a warm welcome and a few locals eating or waiting to eat, always a good selling point. The menu was varied but as it was lunch we had booked to eat at another restaurant that evening so we chose spaghetti. We ordered the house wine, red, nice light and enjoyable for mid day, 3 went for the spaghetti opa and one lasagne. ...

Mosquitos don't bite here....

Advantages: Great atmosphere any time.
Disadvantages: None found.

...name comes from the BIG mosquito that is hanging from the ceiling, (not real) and the adornments around the bar are tee-shirts with the creature on in various poses, print, languages and colour. Mosquito Bar is a bar for any age, and nationality. We spent a great evening with a couple from Ireland that had just landed and who where looking for a bar for the rugby match the following evening, directions given knowledge imparted and a great time had ...
...college crowd, and when a little later they get singing it can be very contagious, so you just have to join in. The music played in the bar is very to suite all age groups, style and tastes though it never appears to be overly loud. They serve a good range of beers, Hogarden, Leffe and a dark beer plus a great array of wines and spirits and as you are off the main drag prices are not bad either. Food is also available, though we have not eaten there, ...

CHEAP & CHEARFUL LUNCH ON BURANO

Advantages: Larger than normal portions of Pasta.
Disadvantages: Can only lunch there once a year.

...evident, I just remember SPORT Restaurant being the name on the Receipt. We usually manage to get an outside table, the weather has always been kind to us. They have about 10 different Pasta ranging from Spaghetti Pomadoro to a sea food one with clams etc. All are reasonable price starting at 6 Euros, also you get a large portion, so with bread is quite filling for lunch. They also do about 20 dirrerent Pizzas with all the Classics, starting ...
...Remember you are in Italy so sharing is not looked down on, and extra plate supplied with a smile. The House Red is 8 Euros a Litre, it does have a slight sparkle to it but still a good drink in the Sunshine. Large Beers (400ml) are 5 Euros but beer is always dear in Italian places. Also as you are in Italy and everything is cooked fresh, things come when ready, so do not feel as the Brits you have to wait until everyone has their's, tuck in and ...
