Writing a restaurant review is very difficult. Different people look for different things in a restaurant. As far as I am concerned what I look for is a good atmosphere, a good menu selection, good value for money, friendly and helpful staff, but mainly it needs to be a restaurant that I want to visit again, and again.
This is certainly the case with Verdes Ristorante and Pizzeria which has been a popular family run restaurant in Lancaster for many years.
The restaurant is situated in the centre of town in Church Street, it's open seven days a week from 11.30am to 10.30pm for meals or just a tea or coffee.
Verdi's is a traditional Italian eatery that uses fresh quality ingredients and uses only De Ceccio pasta. De Ceccio is one of the best pastas available and has been made since 1886.
From the outside Verdi's looks nothing special, but on entering you go through the bar area then into the main restaurant area which has a real Meditteranian atmosphere with hanging grapes, terracotta tiles and hand-painted murals. Verdes has a special party room downstairs, a smoking area at the back and a patio dining area with barbecue that specialises in fish during the summer months.
As most people will know, Lancaster has a high ratio of students living in it, and Verdes is very popular with the students - in fact in 2008 Verdi's won a 'Student Friendly Award' and they offer students any pizza or pasta for £4.25 all day and everyday on production of a valid student ID - NUS, Purplecard, etc - all they ask is that they ring in advance for groups of 7 or more.
The atmosphere in the restaurant is very friendly and on a Tuesday and Sunday can be quite lively as every Sunday from 7pm, David Hickson plays classic guitar - Renaissance, Baroque and Contemporary - and every Tuesday from 7.30pm with Matthew Pendlebury plays the guitar, this adds a lovely authentic atmosphere to the evening.
Verde's have a very popular offer from Monday to Saturday - between 11.30 am and 6.30 pm all pizza and pta dishes are only £4.95 each - this offer includes their signature dishes - Pizza Verde and the Pescatore pasta, they are not small portions either - really delicious ( I recommend the Spaghetti Pescatore - it is seafood, wine, tomato and garlic and really is beautiful !!)
Their menu has a fantastic selection, the starters (a choice of 16 from £2.05 - £6.25) include such dishes as Calamari, home made pate, king prawns cooked in brandy and the beautiful Mozeralla Verde - which are mushroom and mozerella balls, breaded and fried and served with garlic mayonnaise and bbq sauce - yummy!!
For mains as well as the 13 pasta dishes and 13 pizzas on offer there is a wide selection of fish, meat and chicken recipes ranging from £11.95 to £15.95) - these dishes are all a lot different than you'll see on normal menus - dishes like Sampi al Spumante which is a dish of scampi cooked in sparkling wine, cream, paprika and brandy and served on rice or Medaglione al Pistacchio - medallions of beef cooked with pistacchio nuts, shallots and brandy in a light pesto sauce.
This is a really pleasant place to eat, and it ticks all my boxes - a fantastic atmosphere ( tick) , an excellent menu selection (tick) , great value for money (tick) , friendly and helpful staff (tick) and yes I do go back again, and again, and again.........
