...After hearing some slightly worrying stories about Tunisia (safety, treatment of female tourists etc.) we thought 'what-the-heck' and booked a week in the RIU Imperial Marhaba in Port El-Kantaoui.
The accomodation was on a half-board basis and the initial impression upon entering the hotel is 'wow' with a huge marble lobby and cooling air-con. However, for a '5-star' hotel, the rooms do not back this up. Although clean and spacious, they have the impression of needing a re-fit and a lick of paint; it should be stressed that there were no issues with comfort or service here.
Food at the hotel is excellent; plenty of choice, good quality and excellent service, although don't forget to tip as we did one night or some of the staff may give you a cold shoulder or two!

Advantages: A destination to impress your friends with Disadvantages: Dangerous and unpleasant.
....... different.
Nigeria is Located in West Africa, in an area known as "the armpit of Africa" due to... well, officially due to the appearance of the country on a map, the delta of the river Niger making an armpit-like bulge just where the coast turns, but unofficially you could quite easily bring in the hot, humid climate and the smell of the place. Like other West African countries, it is warm and humid. To step outside in this area of the world is to be enfolded in a warm, damp, towel of smog. It is not an unpleasant warmth at first, but over time it saps your strength, eats away at your resolution to achieve your aims and leaves you...

Advantages: Location, decor Disadvantages: Lights not working, no plugs for sink or bath, grumpy staff, noisy, poor food
...I had to travel to Dublin for a couple of days on business & because I work to a tight budget for accommodation, I found it hard to find a hotel in the centre of Dublin on my modest budget. If I wanted cheap accommodation I would be stuck on the outskirts of the city & without a car. Unfortunately on the week before Christmas when it's dark at night, that had little appeal.
I eventually found the HarcourtHotel on Harcourt Street well below budget at around £53.00 a night (depending on exchange rate). This was located close to the main shopping area of Dublin (handy at Christmas) & walking distance to a huge selection of restaurants.
I arrived at the hotel at 6.45pm & was impressed with the reception lobby; it must have dated form the early 20th century with period furniture, lighting & the general décor. At this point I was quite...
