Back to Bologna

Advantages: Funny with some great description of the city
Disadvantages: Not a serious crime thriller, not many suspects

Background: This author was recommended to me again by my well read boss. Originally she introduced me to Donna Leon and she said she thought I would like this author too. As he also writes crime fiction with a Detective Aurelio Zen also based in Italy. About the Author: Michael Dibdin was born in Wolverhampton in March 1947. He qualified as a teacher in Alberta, before moving to Italy in 1979. This was when his writing career took of. Indeed in 1988 he won the Crime Writers Association Maccallan Gold Award for fiction and was shortlisted again in 1991. He wrote in total 18 highly acclaimed novels before his premature death in March 2007. A synopsis of the book: This book features the Inspector Aurelio Zen as the investigating officer. He is summoned with immediate effect to Bologna to oversee the Police investigation ...

Fly High With Santos

Advantages: Quality Persistence Distinctive
Disadvantages: Some Men Do Not Like It

Santos de Cartier was introduced in 1981 and named in honour of Alberto Santos Dumont a pioneer in aviation. Considered by many to be the true father of  flight, Dumont was a friend of Louis Cartier and it was at his friends request that Louis invented the wristwatch, so that he could keep his hands on the controls while checking the time. Santos comes in a very smart silver coloured box and the bottle is a dark brown glass with silvered mountings.Altogether very smart and chic. The fragrance is a blend of lavender, basil, bergamot, nutmeg, cumin, juniper, sandalwood, cedar wood, patchouli and vetiver all pretty much standard ingredients for a mans fragrance but notable for the number used and the skill with which they are combined. This is a very distinctive fragrance, as you would expect from Cartier, in my opinion much more ...

Traveling Via Vias

Advantages: Lovely beach....the south of France, dahling
Disadvantages: Not much to do without a car

If you want to bemuse a foreigner, send them to the bit of France from which I've just returned. Not satisfied with the usual 'one name per place' rule, you'll find references to the areas of Vias, Vias Plage and Vias sur Mer (on post cards, in brochures, on the internet) but, confusingly, only 2 different parts of town, the touristy end and the old French bit. ****** Travel We drove Manchester to Liverpool, flew Liverpool to Nimes, taxied to Nimes town centre, caught a train to Agde and then taxied to Vias Plage. Travelling days were long - in excess of 8 hours - but if you live in other parts of the UK, or are happy to pay a little more for your flights you can reduce the trip quite significantly by flying to Montpellier and then grabbing a cab from there. We chose the fun long way round instead, and paid £100 each ...
