About a month ago my boyfriend suprised me with a trip to Paris! Lucky enough you might think - but the fact that we stayed at this hotel just made it all the better.

The hotel is situated on Rue de Montorgueil (No. 56), 75002 .
When you first approach the hotel (about 20 mintues walk from the main train station) it seems quite easy to miss, surrounded as it is by cafes with their tables spilling out onto the otherwise quiet and pedestrianised street, but once inside you find a fairly large hotel that stretches back far behind the street.

The lobby is small but very comfortable and beautifully clean and decorated, with dark wood and bright cream carpets. The reception staff are incredibly friendly. Everyone spoke English, but they also tolerated our poor excuse for French, and did everything possible to make us feel at home.

Breakfast is served in a seperate dining room to the back of the hotel, also beautifully decorated, with wooden floors, however at 12 Euros per person per day it is more expensive than the cafes outside, which we tended to prefer.

There are a variety of rates ranging from 213 Euros to 330 Euros, but they also operate various discounts at certain times of the year.

There are four general types of room, Standard Room, Superior Room, DeLuxe Room and Junior Suite. I did not see all the types, however they all feature double or twin beds, en suite showers, and are beautifully decorated in colonial style, with wooden bedsteads, and exposed beams. The standard rooms are the smallest, but have the advantage of looking over the small central courtyard and so are quiet and away from the bustle of the street below. The superior rooms are very similar only larger.

We stayed in a junior suite. It was absolutely beautiful! It was large, with a large double bed, small sofa, writing desk, mini bar (elegantly disguised inside a lovely wooden cabinet!). It had a seperate toilet and bathroom, with bath and shower, and a large walk in cupboard. It had everything you need for a romatic weekend away - the mini bar was even stocked with champagne! (We didn't try it though - I have no idea how much that would have cost!) This room also overlooked the courtyard and was extremely quiet and very comfortable. The only downside to this being that it didn't encourage us to leave our room - but then again, it was a romantic weekend away!)

I absolutely loved this place and would highly recommend it as a place to stay. In terms of attractions it is a 10 minute stroll from the river, and 10-15 from the Louvre, no more than half an hour leisurely stroll from Notredame. It is in a fairly pedestrianised area, loads of bars, cafes, and restaurants, and many shops - it seemed to be the equivalent of Covent Garden in London, lots of fairly trendy shops, but very clean and lots to see and do. I thought it was the perfect place to explore Paris from. At the end of the street is a beautiful and very lareg old church, and some small but beautifully maintained gardens, where locals and tourists alike were happy to chill out in the sunshine.

On our first night we went for a long walk, starting at the Louvre and then curving round the river to Notredame, and back along the other side all the way to the Eiffel Tower (which is a fair old walk fom the hotel - we didn't realise quite how ambnitious a plan it was!). We ended up back in our locale at a lovely small restaurant/cafe, sitting on the pavement being served superb local wine, and wonderful food (although very pricy!).

Despite the bustle of cafes and shopping in the day, the street was very quiet by the evening and the hotel very peaceful. We decided to stay in on the second night, and found that the street had everything we needed to make a light dinner in our room, as it is full of bakers, pattissereies, butchers, grocers and framageries, as well as a small supermarket. And the hotel room was more than comfortable enough to not miss restaurant service!

The only thing to point out is that when you book there is a thing called city tax that is not includedin the booking fee. Even though we had already paid for the rooms on booking, we had to pay this upon leaving the hotel, it is only 1 Euro pp per night, but is something to remember if you spent the night before trying to use up your existing Euros! I'm sure this is probably the case in all Paris hotels though.

PS As the hotels website points out - all rooms are soundproofed! Meaning you won'e be disturbed - or, disturb other people!!! ;)
