Oooh, Ah, Canberra

Advantages: 'Interesting', note the inverted commas
Disadvantages: Long way from anywhere civilised

I like to go all out when I travel, and since I've made it all the way to Australia (and, incredibly, managed to get someone else to pay for it all under the pretence that it's a business trip) I'm keen to take advantage of my temporary location and see it all, or as much as my time frame will allow. This weekend, therefore, I decided to pop off to Canberra, Australia's capital, to see what all the fuss was about. I've visited many capital cities, from Vienna and Rome to London and Washington DC. Hands down, Canberra is the least capital-like Capital city I have ever seen. Canberra is in its own little world, the Australian Capital Territory, much like Washington's home in the District of Columbia. Rumour has it that when they realised they could do with a capital, the good people of Australia were torn between the two obvious choices ...

Fruit pie for breakfast? Yes, if you stay at Tuure B and B!

Advantages: A reasonable price for Finland, great breakfast, very clean and comfortable
Disadvantages: Rooms are quite small, lack of parking spaces may be a problem for some

This bed and breakfast is situated close to the bus station and just five minutes walk from the very centre of town. We arrived in Turku by train and walked the route in ten minutes so the location is good yet still quiet. Look hard, it's not easy to spot. The doorway looks like all the doorways on the block which is full of shops and offices. There is an entry buzzer to let you in; once you check in you'll have a key for this door. The B and B is up a couple of flights and there's no lift. It's not too bad but people with mobility problems should be aware of this. We hadn't booked in advance but there was a room available. We were checked in without fuss and while the owner wasn't effusive she was friendly enough. The bedrooms are off the main corridor as are the shared shower rooms. This does mean a certain amount of noise as ...

Bed and breakfast in a Tower!

Advantages: very clean, friendly proprietor, felt homy, great views
Disadvantages: the plug socket looked worrying

We recently had a night away in Melksham, near Chippenham, to attend the wedding of family friends and - as is usual with these friends of ours - they booked us into a local bed and breakfast and then (as usual) paid for our stay! After a mind-numbingly terrible journey down the M6 and then the M5 that took the best part of four hours, I must admit, I was hoping this bed and breakfast would at least be comfortable. I'm going to start at the end of my stay in order to give some background to Sandridge Tower which the proprietor Mrs. Woodhouse kindly filled us in with after breakfast before we left. It's actually the last place in the world I would expect to have a webpage, but - using that - I learnt that it was built as a "folly" (ie. a building that is basically decorative but doesn't have any special purpose, if I understand the term ...
