Victoria & Albert Museum (London)

The Victorian age was probably the golden age of museum building. They gathered vast collections and put them in splendid buildings for the good of the public so their lives would be enriched by the knowledge they gained from these institutions. (It was also a way for the great unwashed to ... Read review

The V & A: Vast and atractive

Advantages: free so much to see wonderful objects
Disadvantages: expensive food in the cafe, size can make it difficult to navigate

...greatest of these is the Victoria and Albert Museum (fondly known as the V &A) which is the national museum for the decorative and applied arts. It is a place I have always quite fancied visiting but have only been in London visiting Duskman and it is not a place I think he would enjoy that much. Now that we actually live in London I thought I would spend near enough a day just wandering round this vast museum and appreciating the beautiful objects ...
...enjoyed my wander around the Victoria and Albert. I certainly will go back. I want to see the galleries that I missed and skimmed over especially the Chinese ones. I saw some of the exhibits on my guided tour and the Imperial robes and thrones really brought to life for me objects described in books that I have read such as Empress Orchid. I would also like to see more of the exterior as I entered and exited by tunnel. There is so much to see at ... more

V&A by night

Advantages: varied unboring exhibitions that change constantly
Disadvantages: can be busy int he day

There is a little gem of a evening every wednesday night, when the museum is open until 10pm. The fantastic thing about this is that although there are people milling around, it obviously is still a secret to most people because apart from the main voyer and the lecture rooms, you can find yourself virtually alone when you explore all the galleries - a refreshing change from the mass crowds in the day time. Greeting you in the main is the sound ...
...violin and guitar) or cultural ( last time we were treated to old Spainish tunes by a man and a women picking on their classical guitars). This is a beautiful sound because as you walk around the galleries you can still hear the music. It gives it such a magical feeling instead of the whispered conversations and clapping of heels usually accompanied in many galleries and museums in the city. Also for the wednesday evening late opening, they set up ...

A Great Museum

Advantages: Great collections.
Disadvantages: Can get crowded during peak periods

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London-often affectionately called the V&A-is arguably the finest and most interesting decorative art museum in the world. This is especially in the case of the visitor who has a broad sense of aesthetics but perhaps would not regard themselves has having a particularly learned background in art,art history and the decorative arts. The V&A in some regards is unique in that it features exhibits from a diverse array ...
...are from different parts of the world, not just Britain. The collection at this splendid Museum have been selected mainly on account of aesthetic reasons and their significance in the history of design and not only or essentially because of their historical importance. The Museum was founded in 1851 by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria-he seemed to have founded a lot of places - and today it boasts a collection in excess of four million objects. ...

Free Theatrical Fantasy

Advantages: Free, interesting displays, fun for everyone
Disadvantages: none

This museum, a branch of the Victoria and Albert museum, is situated in London's theatre land on Tavistock Street, right next to Covent Garden. The museum displays the history of theatre fom Elizabethan times to the modern day. It has displays, minature models of theatres, film footage, programmes, paintings of actors, costumes and props and so much more. Their current special display is of photographs of actors backstage during performances. The gallery is laid out like the backstage area of a theatre with dressing rooms, long corridoors and even a toilet and shower, all housing pictures of the famous as they prepare for there performances. Whilst the museum is anything but large by London standards, it still manages to house a surprisingly large amount of information and I have not once visited and felt it was crowded or too ...

Review of Theatre Museum (London)

Loving London!

Advantages: Exciting, lots to do, atmosphere, shops, so much to do!
Disadvantages: Crime, pollution, noisy

in the world. Housing: You?d be lucky to find a studio flat for less than £100,000 in any area of London. Rents wise, for a decent flat share, you?re looking at around £100 a week. You can find these in the Evening Standard newspaper or ?Loot.? Shopping: One of the best things is the shops! We have all the best department stores such as Harvey Nichols, Harrods and Selfridges. Bond Street and Sloane Street are filled with all the designer shops. And who can forget Tiffany?s? It really is worth a visit and the sales assistants are not pushy at all. There is also the usual range of high street stores. The culture: There are many museums. They are mostly in South Kensington and include the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert and the British Museum. London is awash with theatres and art galleries such as The Tate and The Tate ...

Freedom of the City, Old London Town

Advantages: Lots to see, lots to do, comprehensive travel deals
Disadvantages: Quite expensive, you need to stick with the programme to make it worthwhile.

, Hampton Court, Windsor Castle, The Royal Mews and St Paul?s Cathedral (plus thirteen others). The British, The Guards, The Jewish and London?s Transport (and ten more) make up the Museum list. There are six galleries including the Bankside and the National. It is perhaps worthy of note some of the sites that are NOT included in the package. These include the Victoria and Albert Museum, Westminster Abbey, The London Eye. MORE TO SEE AND DO There is a fifty minute courtesy narrated catamaran tour from the South Bank pier along the river to Tower Bridge and back. There is an alternative cruise on a narrow boat along Regent?s Canal from Little Venice to Camden Lock. There are also a number of escorted walking tours in the heart of London. Many of the sites also offer free cakes with coffee, entry into additional exhibition, free loan ...
