The Victoria and Albert Museum in London-often affectionately called the V&A-is arguably the finest and most interesting decorative art museum in the world. This is especially in the case of the visitor who has a broad sense of aesthetics but perhaps would not regard themselves has having a particularly learned background in art,art history and the decorative arts.
The V&A in some regards is unique in that it features exhibits from a diverse array of areas including sculpture, ceramics, furniture, jewellery, metalwork, textiles, clothing and many of these items are from different parts of the world, not just Britain.
The collection at this splendid Museum have been selected mainly on account of aesthetic reasons and their significance in the history of design and not only or essentially because of their historical importance.
The Museum was founded in 1851 by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria-he seemed to have founded a lot of places - and today it boasts a collection in excess of four million objects. Wow! The downside is that such a huge collection makes its display difficult and in some regards the Museum is more than a bit like a rabbit warren. This can make it more than a bit difficult for the first time visitor to navigate around the myriad exhibits.
It is a real treasure trove and it has the world's finest collection of Constables and has one of the largest collections of Italian Renaissance sculpture outside of Italy. There is also a gallery devoted to glass and its 4,000 year old history. Enough of the superlatives. Let it suffice to say that the V&A will heighten any visitor's appreciation of decotrative art and design-it really is a national treasure that Britain should be proud of !
