Advantages: Just so much to do! Disadvantages: Hassel from local traders
I spent 5 days in Victoria Falls, and had a ball! I was travelling on an overland truck with about 20 other people, and we had all been looking forward to it. When we arrived at the campsite, we noticed how ‘empty’ the place was. This was because of the political ‘situation’, and the state of emergency, which has, for obvious reasons, kept many tourists away. Our driver/leader was kept constantly up to date with the situation ... ...a fantastic view of the Victoria Falls Bridge. Again, be prepared to get soaked! It costs about US$3 to get in, and they will not take ZIM$.
This is well worth doing, and can be combined with a Sunset Booze Cruise, with all you can eat and drink for about US$15! Great fun – the challenge is to drink the boat dry, which is nigh on impossible, and has never been done!
Our driver/leader was kept constantly up to date with the situation there, and the company decided that it would be no problem for us to go there. I’m so glad they did.
Anyway, the campsite was pretty run down, shower blocks with no lighting, no doors etc! But most of us in the group decided to stay in one of the 2 bed cabins for a couple of dollars extra a night. (We were sick to death of tenting it) The cabins were pretty grotty, but they had beds, and a bathroom so that was all that mattered to us. We wouldn’t be spending much time in there anyway.
Most things are very, very cheap here, as there are ZIM$120 to US$1. You would pay about 30p for a beer, and 20p for a packet of cigarettes! Eating out, souvenirs and taxis all work out ridiculously cheap! Other mainstream activities (see below) have to be paid for in US$ so cost quite a bit more.
Day Time Activities
A visit to the Falls
One of the most amazing things I have ever experienced in my life. As you walk to wards the falls (just follow the huge column of spray which is metres high,) you begin to hear them, and the air begins to feel damp. The anticipation begins………… We were bombarded by local traders trying to sell us umbrellas and plastic coveralls. We all declined, we wanted to get wet! So armed with our plastic-bag covered cameras we arrived at the entrance. The place was deserted, no other tourists for miles! It cost about US$10 to get in, but if you pay in ZIM$ it works out much cheaper.
There are many viewpoints from which to see the falls, and you can visit them all by just walking along the path, no need for guides here. The falls were breathtaking, there are no words to describe it! I can describe me though – absolutely soaked to the skin – fantastic!
We were there for a couple of hours just looking, taking in the scenery, getting wetter and wetter. The river (the Zambezi) was very high so there was a lot of spray which sometimes made it difficult to see more than a thick fog, but gusts of wind usually helped out in clearing these away, for views of millions of gallons of water pouring down into the canyon.
The Falls can also be viewed from the Zambian side. You can get a taxi to take you over, but you will need to pass through passport control. Once there, there are paths that lead down to the Zambezi so you get a totally different perspective of the Falls and a fantastic view of the Victoria Falls Bridge.
Other Activities
· Elephant Riding (see my other op) US$90 · Bungee Jumping – WOW! US$90 · Canoeing · White water rafting – depending on the time of year · Flights over the falls, from US$120
Night Time Activities
· The Explorer bar is great fun, with dreadful music that everyone loves, and satellite TV · The campsite bar – very dodgy, but shots of vodka are about 15p · The Kingdom - A huge purpose built entertainment centre with bars, a club, numerous restaurants, and a casino – a good laugh, but hardly typical African culture or overlander roughing it! · Mama Africa – for authentic African food · Many other excellent restaurants
Other Stuff
· There are numerous hotels here as well, all virtually empty, so you can always haggle for a room – feels weird, but works well. · Try the Pink Baobab for an excellent breakfast and superb orange juice · Times are tough for locals, so you get hassled a lot. They are not trying to rip you off, just earn a few bucks – they could do with a break, but never buy currency on the street · Shearwater is the place to organise all your activities. All the staff here are excellent and very helpful – I think they must be on commission. · Internet access is available and very cheap
What more can I say? Check out the current situation and GO GO GO……..
Advantages: Breathtaking scenery, and an amazing atmosphere Disadvantages: It can be a bit on the wet side!
I spent 5 days in Livingstone after working in schools in the north of the country for 3 weeks. I went in May, which is considered winter time, buti t was dry and as hot as a good day in the English summer (but very cold at night). The rainbow from the falls can be seen from the road leading to it, about a mile away, but nothing can prepare you for the sound of the water crashing down! It cost around $10 to go to the falls, but you can pay the equivalent ... ...can see the falls, which are astounding. It can be tricky getting the perfect photo if it is busy, as the viewing areas are quite small, but that is the nature of this beautiful area. They made me feel very humble, and closer to nature-away from our materialistic world. You can carry on past the falls and walk alongside the edge of the Zambezi river, which boasts blue waters, hippos and fantastic sunsets. If you get the chance, go on the African Queen ...

Advantages: Best view possible of Victora Falls Disadvantages: Completely unsafe.
If you're going to visit Victoria Falls in the rainy season, make sure you visit the Zambian side. There is much less commercialisation than on the Zimbabwean side. You just turn up, pay a couple of quid and are told to walk along a slippery path with a shear drop of 180 metres next to it. It may be completely unsafe, but there are no hand rails or anything, and as long as you're careful, this makes it a much more exiting experience. I asked a local ... ...shoulders and said that if they had no-one would know about as the crocodiles at the bottom of the falls would eat the body.
It only costs $10 US to get a visa to go into Zambia (free if you stay overnight). This is well worth it, as you get so much closer to the edge (actually right uo to the edge). ...

Advantages: One of the 7 wonders of the world Disadvantages: none really - excepting for the current political climate
A World Heritage Site and one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World, this is the largest curtain of falling water on earth, with Zambia on one side and Zimbabwe (VictoriaFalls) on the other.
Dr. David Livingstone first set eyes on VictoriaFalls in 1855 and was immediately enthralled, and yet, to this day the gentle grumbling still reminds us that this is one of the finest natural places to visit on earth! A bridge (both rail and road) was constructed by Charles Darwin's son, which joined Zimbabwe and Zambia.
There is plenty to do and see for the more adventurous visitor. Bungee jumping, white water rafting are but only two of various activities to take part in. Canoe and walking safaris are also on offer by the many tour operators. For the sporting type, golf can be played at a local hotel's golf course. Inevitably, you ...
Advantages: spectacular world-class sight, lots of things to do Disadvantages: town is tourist trap - unlike rest of the country
flows under the VictoriaFalls Bridge and between the borders of Zimbabwe and Zambia towards Lake Kariba.
Visiting The Falls - To see the falls from the ground, you must enter the national park (current entrance fee = US$20 per person). The entrance fee does not permit re-entry (even on the same day) - so if you want to see the falls in the early morning and again in the late afternoon sunlight then you have to pay to re-enter. There are no catering facilities inside the park area so this doesn't really encourage you to linger all day (although you could if you wished). The park itself is quite well kept and provides viewing points dotted along the cliff walkway. However, its quite difficult to take any photographs without getting drenched by the spray. Make sure any camera equipment is suitably protected.
Other Attractions - The town ...
Advantages: breathtaking Disadvantages: lack of decent toilets
Into the northwest of Zimbabwe runs the Zambezi River. This great river enters Zimbabwe from Zambia in an astounding manner. It crashes over one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world - VictoriaFalls. David Livingstone was the first outsider to stumble across this incredible nature feature and reported it to the world in 1860, naming it after his Queen - Victoria.
However, the 'natives' had already given it a name - Mosi-oa-Tunya - meaning The Smoke that Thunders. This is a very apt name which they gave it as the roar of the falls can be heard from the town of VictoriaFalls which is situated about 15mins walk away. The spray - or smoke as they described it - can be seen from miles away as the water falls 100m into a deep gorge.
The falls themselves are situated in their own National Park, protecting them from ...
