Into the northwest of Zimbabwe runs the Zambezi River. This great river enters Zimbabwe from Zambia in an astounding manner. It crashes over one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world - Victoria Falls. David Livingstone was the first outsider to stumble across this incredible nature feature and reported it to the world in 1860, naming it after his Queen - Victoria.
However, the 'natives' had already given it a name - Mosi-oa-Tunya - meaning The Smoke that Thunders. This is a very apt name which they gave it as the roar of the falls can be heard from the town of Victoria Falls which is situated about 15mins walk away. The spray - or smoke as they described it - can be seen from miles away as the water falls 100m into a deep gorge.
The falls themselves are situated in their own National Park, protecting them from the destructive nature of some humans. Entry into the Park costs around $5 Zim for the Zimbabweans but $5 US (for children) or $10 US (for adults). These prices may well have risen since I visited in December 1999 as the Zimbabwean dollar has depreciated greatly since then.
On entering the Park there is a small hut containing a short history of the falls along with photos and maps of the area. It really is very small and probably won't take more than 15-20mins to look at everything. You then walk through a rain forest, this is an amazing area as it is all natural. This rain forest survives because of the spray from the falls and the high humidity in the surrounding areas. I'm sure that is one of the few natural rain forests to be found so far south of the Tropics.
Anyway, to get back to the Falls. After a short walk through the humid forest you get your first glimpse of the 2km long falls. The first part that you will probably see is called Devils Cataract. A short walk along through the Rain Forest will bring you to the main part of the falls. This is the section that you will see on your Tourist Information Sheets and the like. At this point its probably quite a good idea to put away anything which you want to keep dry and if possible take out the umbrella. We got soaked and the rainy season had only just begun.
Further along the walk you leave the rain forest behind you, and the fences to stop you falling over, and approach Rainbow Falls. Peering over the edge of these falls you will see a rainbow, or at least part of one - again this depends on the time of year you visit. At the end of the walk, before you turn back to return to the exit, you can see the Boiling Pot. Here the water, which has fallen from the heights, turns an abrupt corner before continuing along to form the rapids where you can white water raft. You can also get a glimpse of the bridge that crosses the gorge in Zambia and from where - if you're mad enough - you can do a bungee jump.
The toilet facilities are very limited, we only saw one little block and they were quite dirty, with no toilet paper. However, there may well be more - we had to rush back from the far end of the falls as a huge storm blew over the Zambezi from Zambia.
If you want to buy souvenirs and food its best to wait until you get back to the town. There are street vendors outside the Park gates but they will charge you extortionate prices because they KNOW you're a tourist.
If you want to see the falls from a different angle there is the Flight of the Angels. This is a trip which sadly I didn't have time to go on, but apparently is spectacular. It's a flight over the falls in a small plane, I believe it takes around 30mins and is quite expensive.
If you're travelling in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia or even South Africa I strongly recommend including a trip to Victoria Falls. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Advantages: For me, being married to a Zimbabwean Disadvantages: Too many sellers
I took a trip to Zimbabwe back in June 2000 to meet my wife's family for the very first time. During that 3 week visit we decided to take a short flight from harare (about an hour) to stay for 3 days at The Kingdom. Basically this was the 2nd closest hotel to Vic Falls and as my wife was a Zim citizen then we got to stay there for $20US each per night. The usual tourist cost was $120.
The falls themselves are just fantastic and I regret not taking ... ...We did however fly over the falls on the way in, so that certainly made up for it.
The falls are located within a park, which at the time of the year we were there, was very quiet. I dont remember the cost to the park, however on the walk down to the park we encountered an elephant standing in the middle of the path. Obviously we took a very wide berth around him.
Its very difficult to describe one of those freaks of nature, like the falls, and ...

Advantages: One of the 7 wonders of the world Disadvantages: none really - excepting for the current political climate
...Livingstone first set eyes on Victoria Falls in 1855 and was immediately enthralled, and yet, to this day the gentle grumbling still reminds us that this is one of the finest natural places to visit on earth! Advantages: The highest waterfall in the UK Disadvantages: Not much else to do there
Having previously visited the spectacular VictoriaFalls in Zimbabwe, I was expecting to be disappointed when I visited High Force last autumn with my Girlfriend. The falls are a meagre 21m high but my opinion soon changed when I arrived.
The falls are only about 40 miles from Newcastle and the journey (directions below) will take you about an hour and a half. In all this may seem like the falls are not worth visiting, but if you have a free day whilst in Newcastle or Northumberland, pack a picnic and go.
The journey to the falls takes you through some beautiful countryside and small villages as you traverse across Teesdale. Eventually you will arrive at the falls, which are marked by a small car park, gift shop and a pub. It costs £1.50 to park and then a further £1 per person to take the woodland walk to the falls (50p ...
Advantages: Not many tourists Disadvantages: Getting eaten by a lion, hippo, hyena, leopard, honey badgers
, after everyone had gone to bed and met a hyena face-to-face. Not one of those cute cartoon hyenas that laugh all the time, but a big, long-legged one with an intimidating smile. He couldn't remember the jungle etiquette for meeting hyenas, stood for a while, and then eventually said, "shoo" and it trotted off. Hyenas are nasty things that don't really play the game. If you leave your shoes outside the tent they will steal them. They love the smell. If you put them inside the tent they will come in to get them and possibly eat you too. I was terrified for most of the time in Chobe, but I loved the experience.
After traveling across Chobe, and a brief game-viewing excursion into Zimbabwe, we arrived at VictoriaFalls, for a short stay before being reunited with our luggage and our flights home. There are various things to do here ...
Advantages: spectacular world-class sight, lots of things to do Disadvantages: town is tourist trap - unlike rest of the country
VictoriaFalls is the number one destination for most visitors to Zimbabwe (or indeed Southern Africa) and must surely be one of the most memorable sights in the world. The Zambezi River expands to an incredible width of over a mile before thundering 100 metres down a sheer chasm and into turbulent white waters. Before reaching the falls, the river is a peaceful place with palm-dotted islands scattered throughout the water. The area around the falls is rainforest fed by the constant spray from the falls. Rainbows can be seen from all angles. Viewing of the falls is done from within the VictoriaFalls National Park where you can see antelope, vervet monkey, warthog and banded mongoose living amid the spray. Beyond the falls, the river winds its way down the gorge and provides some of the best white water rafting in the world. Finally, it ...
