Having read several bad reviews of the Victoria Hotel, Amsterdam, I thought I'd better add my 2 pence worth.
I recently spent two nights here after finding a bargain last minute deal on the internet.

Having read several bad reviews of the Victoria Hotel, Amsterdam, I thought I'd better add my 2 pence worth. I recently spent two nights here after finding a bargain last minute deal on the internet.
PROS We booked a triple room, which was two twin beds and a third camp bed (added to the room after we arrived). The beds were comfy, and the room and ensuite were both spotless. The staff were exceptionally helpful and polite - one even recommended a restaurant which served vegetarian food. The swimming pool is free for guests to use, although we didn't. Despite being directly opposite the station, the rooms were lovely and quiet at night. Room service is excellent, and the food is delicious!!
CONS The walls were a bit thin - you could hear voices and televisions late at night but this was only a problem on the first night. The breakfast is horrendously expensive at 20euros, but there are plenty of lovely cheaper places nearby. You have to pay extra to use the sauna, internet etc, although I expected that (and there are plenty of internet cafes around). Oh, and watch out for the very graphic porn channel (may be a pro for some!!).
Overall a lovely hotel. I'd definitely stay there again, although I wouldn't pay their full price (over 200euros a night).
Advantages: Good hotel, central location Disadvantages: expensive for food
My wife and I stayed here in July 2006, we had 4 nights here booked seperatley with a KLM flight. And yes were were having a kiddless adult break.
I would NOT recommend anyone really to take their kids to Amsterdam although there were plenty out and around in the town.
The hotels location is great, being very central, just over the road from the central train station. (We got off the plane at Schipol and on to the train within the airport straight ... ...* official standard and it really is. The reception is well laid out, plush and nice staff. The bar is very close to the reception adjoining the restaurant. The bar was really nice. A low bar with small sunken seats. Again the staff were really nice and made you very welcome.
The rooms were typical of 4* standard. They do not disapoint. Well laid out rooms (Mini bar is expensive, but hey your on ya hols) Tv with really good porn channel!! (You have ...

Advantages: cheap and cheerful great for a break Disadvantages: expensive meals
...2 nights on board 5 1/2 hours in city approximatly departs Newcastle Upon Tyne. North shields ferry port. Pick ups arranged out side of Newcastles (train) central station where a bus waits for you, fare costs £3 adult £2 child - 1 way. Details on www.DFDS.co.uk
Great for a little break away ( 2nights on boards 1 day in city center), entertainment on each evening:- including bingo 6 euros - prizes are vouchers to spend on board, evening show and band and a disco till early hours and also a cinema however i also found this expenisive at 7 euros a person.
The meals are expensive however, and would recommend people taking a few sandwiches if on a budget and possibly a travel kettle and their own water etc..
Transport into Amsterdam drop off and pick up at the Victoriahotel opposite the central station and even a mini tour...

Advantages: Cheap Break to Amsterdam Disadvantages: Sea travel may not be for all
...go ashore!!!! (Must be a common thing seeing as some of these cruises have the reputation of being The Booze Cruise, I imagine people party on the ship whilst at sea and sleep whilst in port at Amsterdam).
Once in port we transfered to a complimentary coach bound for the centre of Amsterdam. (You have a choice here, you can either opt for an hours sightseeing on the coach or just a direct 20min transfer)
We went on the 1 hr sightseeing tour and it was ok. It was good to see some of Amsterdam in this way. Bearing in mind your only ashore for approx 8 hours till your ship sails home.
The bus then dropped us off outside the VictoriaHotel, opposite the central station in Amsterdam. (Please see review on this hotel I have written also if your interested in staying in Amsterdam)
We spent a cpl of hours walking around Amsterdam...

Advantages: Lot's of things to see. Excellent transport Disadvantages: Drug dealers, pickpockets
...hotels, all of a different rating. The best hotel in the city has to be the VictoriaHotel. I'm unsure of the prices but I have been told that is reasonable.
Overall Amsterdam is a very nice city spoiled by the drug dealers and pickpockets....
