Advantages: Better than my dream, romance, culture Disadvantages: The troubled Middle East
...cruised for an hour on the Nile in a felucca, a little like an Italian Gondola, and marvelled at our week in Luxor as we watched the sunset and wondered what Cairo would have in store for us.
And in Cairo I went Inside a Pyramid!
*********************************
The early morning internal flight from Luxor to Cairo took less than an hour, where we were booked for two nights in the VictoriaHotel, right in the centre of the city. If Cairo had been the first experience of Egypt and not the comparative calm of Luxor, I would have been scared witless. The manic, chaotic, suicidal traffic was unbelievable. The haunting call to prayer from the mosques carry through the air, as Egypt is predominantly a Muslim country.
Thankfully, the VictoriaHotel was yet another raffish Colonial haven of peace, with a very different view from our hotel room...

Advantages: Haven to relax after a day sightseeing Disadvantages: Still some refurbishment going on in hotel
...We have just returned from 3nts at this wonderful hotel. We had one of the renovated rooms overlooking the Nile and the gardens / pool which was really lovely.
The hotel is a real haven from the hustle and bustle of Cairo and it is really beautiful throughout.
As we arrived very late one evening we had arranged for the hotel's meet and greet service which was excellent and made the experience less daunting. Having said that our experiences at Cairo airport have been better than at some uk airports!
It was an excellent hotel and the staff were all very helpful. We ate at the Waves snack bar and Harry's Pub and the food was excellent at both and very reasonably priced.
We were lucky enough to have a fantastic Egyptian guide to show us around Cairo and I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and him to really make your visit to Cairo...

Advantages: Nice and Cheap. Disadvantages: smelly elevator.
...Stayed at this Hotel last January and it was a bargain for the price. it's got an old style reception and for some unknown reason it had a Ford Prefect parked outside!!! (whether some one was actually using it or whether it was there as some some of hotel advertising ploy I don't know) the rooms were ok, with reasonable en-suites and like most places in Cairo it had two single beds instead of a nice double.
The hotel also has a pretty good rooftop bar waiter service and with a limited view of Cairo. the bar's toilets are also kept clean by an efficient attendant who likes his tips. (these toilets were probably the cleanest I'd seen in Cairo except for McDonalds.)
Breakfast wasn't bad considering the price. I would stay there again if I were on a budget, but I preferred the atmosphere of the Windsor Cairo. (also downtown) The Odeon...

Advantages: good location, clean and comfortable Disadvantages: none
...The Dutch Golden Tulip hotel chain has two hotels in Egypt. One in Cairo and the other is a resort hotel on the Red Sea. On a recent visit to Cairo, I stayed at the Cairohotel. It is a four star hotel and rooms start at about EUR65 a night.
The hotel is located in Zamalek, an island on the Nile in a fairly quiet area (by Egyptian standards) with lots of shaded avenues and 19th century buildings, including many homes of foreign dignitaries. Zamalek is a great location to be in as there are several western chain fast food restaurants nearby (Pizza Hut, McDonalds, etc.) and a supermarket just around the corner. The hotel also has its own bakery with very good pastries and breads. It is an area that is popular with a lot of foreigners, particularly Europeans. There is also an internet café just across the street.
While there is no metro...

As a treat for my 35th birthday, my partner treated me to an overnight stay in a hotel of my choosing in the Cotswold district.
