You can get tattooed, have your photograph taken in fancy dress or shop for souveniers, leather goods, ceramics or just standard tourist ... ...become better known and the resultant success has resulted in some small scale individual crafts people being pushed out to make way for bigger glossier tourist trap type areas, although a lot of unique products can still be found. My own favourite New Zealand souvenir was purchased here: a hand moulded ceramic bowl with three little goblins peering in which has pride of place on my mantlepiece. Definitely worth a visit, even if you're not intending to buy.

While staying in Russell you can enjoy Paihia, which is the nearest island, which you get a taxi to (on foot, by boat, cheap too!), with a lot of shops, the nearest market, etc, and many sea rides. We did both, but sadly due to the time of year, we couldn't swim with dolphins because the babies couldn't be alienated from their pods. Although we saw lots, and it was a nice day.
So, our trip was coming to an end, so back we went to Auckland, the biggest city in the country, with 1 million of the 4 million population. Here we went to a few of the cities sights- the town beaches (5 mins from town, you can find a quiet beach with nice sand with ideal swimming waters), skytower (HUGE tower to view Auckland), VictoriaParkMarket (unique shops), the marina (internationally famous) and the shops.
