Don't be put off by an uninspiring exterior. The Victoria Park market within easy walking distance of central Aukland, just down the road from the sky tower provides a pleasant morning 's shopping. There are a wide range of shops, many selling locally produced crafts (I particularly reccommend the possum-fur socks, gloves and hats). You can get tattooed, have your photograph taken in fancy dress or shop for souveniers, leather goods, ceramics or just standard tourist tatt. Over the past few years the market has become better known and the resultant success has resulted in some small scale individual crafts people being pushed out to make way for bigger glossier tourist trap type areas, although a lot of unique products can still be found. My own favourite New Zealand souvenir was purchased here: a hand moulded ceramic bowl with three little goblins peering in which has pride of place on my mantlepiece. It was very carefully packed by the seller meaning it survived the trip home the long way round. The food court is rather limited but what food is served is of good quality. Definitely worth a visit, even if you're not intending to buy.
