Having been born in Minsk and living there for 14 years I never quite appreciated all the sights that much. I think it is only when you have people visiting you and you have to show them around, then you start to learn more about those places, that you've taken for granted. That or when you want to write a review.
********Minsk
First of all a little bit of background about Minsk. Minsk was founded in 1067. So it is a truly ancient city. The legend tells that a legendary prince Menesk, has founded the city after the bloody battle on River Nemiga. You would expect to see lots and lots of ancient ruins wouldn't you? Sorry to disappoint you but the whole of the city was rebuilt after the war. Not only it was bombed by Germans, but was also destroyed by Russians in the process of chasing Germans out.
******Square and the obelisk
On one of the main squares of Minsk there is a memorial with an eternal flame. A four sided obelisk reminds us of those who sacrificed their lives during Second World War. Every fourth Belarus died during the war. Each side of the obelisk symbolises different things: 1 symbolises war front, the other one defence, 3rd symbolises underground movements and finally the 4th one symbolises partisans (partisan is basically a civilian fighting on his own initiative, and in Belarus they were significant force against Germans. Usually Partisans were either too old or young to join the army, so they fought on their own) This obelisk with built in the victory Square on the 4th of July 1954 to commemorate 10 years of freedom from fascist occupation. On the victory day May 9th there is always a parade of veterans and children who lay down the flowers in commemoration of the dead.

Victory square underground station has exits by the actual obelisk as well as ones closer to the park. Despite being so central it is relatively quiet around the Victory Square. It is the place to meet people and chill next to the river.

infomation guide I enjoyed the feast on the eyes that is Minsk. Powerful looking buildings and monuments, impressive squares such as Victorysquare and even large residential housing blocks all had an architectural style that looked so quintessential 'soviet union'. Never having visited the former USSR, every view I had (no matter how mundane to the average MInsk resident no doubt) was awesome.
I visited the ballet for the first time in my life, again a wonderfully different experince and what was so nice was people of all ages there and enjoying themselves. Youngsters showed adulation for the perfromers that in England is reserved for Premership footballers. The ballet building itself looked like a ancient Greek building - but with a communist twist to it!
Before I left England I had heard stories of crime and muggings in former soviet ...

Advantages: Beautiful places to see,friendly,cheap. Disadvantages: a lot of crime,gets very cold in winter.
on the walls....very nice.
Troitskoe predmestye - definatly a must see - peole call it "an old town". Its the only one place in Minsk left with an old buildings. Great views, some nice restaurants are in there, lots of weddings are held in there too.
Parks - there are quite a lot of parks. Park Cheluskentsov and Gorkogo are the most popular ones and have a rollercoastes.
Square of victory- is avery beautiful place in the centre of Minsk. Its a monument to those who died in War. It has a fire which never ends and a guard which stands arount it.
There are plenty more to see but i can't write about all these places because it will take me ages to finish this review....
