Some classy shops
Review of SCS - Shopping City Süd (Vienna) by Morgenhund

Advantages: wide range of shops with better stock levels than many in-town branches
Disadvantages: hassle to get there - takes a good 30 minutes from the city centre

...lot of the stores in SCS do have outlets in town, most of the outlets are not as big as this. My reason for going initially was to see if the P&C (Peek & Cloppenberg) outlet had a different selection of clothes to the store in the Mariahilferstraße (see separate opinion!) although generally the selection was pretty similar. I went to Eduscho and Tschibo (there are branches in town on practically every street!) to see if they had got any of the things ...
...also take a trip to SCS to relax, as there is a 9 screen multiplex cinema, a fitness centre, snooker/pool centre and a bowling alley, not to mention “Nachtschicht” which is a meat market/nightclub. Nachtschicht often has SMS clubbing nights (sponsored by One – one of Austria’s most prominent mobile phone networks) where you can chat people up by text message – if that is your thing – they send out frequent text messages to One for Me users reminding ... P and C - Pricey and Classy
Review of Peek and Cloppenburg (Vienna) by Morgenhund

Advantages: Reliable quality, good range of designer clothing
Disadvantages: Service could be better.

There are two branches of Peek and Cloppenburg in Vienna, although the one I intend to concentrate on is the one on the Mariahilferstrasse (number 26-30 on the corner of Stiftgasse). It is easy to get to, being 250m from the U3 stop at Neubaugasse and about 400m from the U2 stop Museumsquartier (formerly named Babenburgerstraße). Having lived in Vienna for nearly four years I have managed to get quite a few good bargains here, although you have to ...
...card. Update - October 2004: Peek und Cloppenburg may soon be changing its policy to allow owners of Austrian Maestro cards to use their debit cards in-store. That will be a big relief for me, rather than raiding bank machines before going shopping. The reason I choose to go to P&C is because of the wide range of designer labels that they have there. I tend to stick to a few tried and tested labels, with Calvin Klein, Burberry, Hugo Boss and Ralph ... Read review

Mistress Vienna and her Dungeon of pain
Review of The Merry Monk (Vienna) by Morgenhund

Advantages: open until after dawn
Disadvantages: awful lager

The Merry Monk is located mere walking distance from Schwedenplatz, and could therefoer be classed as being on the periphery of Vienna's "Bermuda Dreieck" - no prizes for guessing that that means "Bermuda Triangle"! The bar is a place where I have only ver been after a massive session and have unwisely seen fit to continue drinking towards armageddon, oblivion and a hangover, whilst waiting for the public transport system to start up again. Having ...
...there in a taxi. The bar itself is clad in black leather, giving it a dungeon like feel and the strange, overly subdued lighting gives this bar a tacky bordello feel, something that is confirmed by the tacky neon signs, and the strange saloon doors. The journey into the depths of Hades is completed by the loos, being almost indestructible and also further downstairs. The bar serves Finnish Lager, which slips down after about thirteen others, but ... Read review

Musician's Graves
Review of Zentralfriedhof by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Fantasic monuments and carvings
Disadvantages: Feels a little morbid

I was a little unsure about writing this particular review, Vienna’s Central Cemetery, Zentralfriedhof. Where to start? As part of my family history research, I often go “grave wandering” as my son calls it. This may seem a little morbid and strange. But the connection I feel from visiting an ancestor’s grave is undeniably strong. And this too, was one of the main reasons for visiting Vienna’s cemetery, the final resting place of my idols, the musicians ...
...connection. The central cemetery lies on the southern outskirts of the city and can be reached by tram, numbers 71 or 72. The trams run at frequent intervals and the journey takes about 10 minutes. The Central Cemetery opened in the year 1874. The buildings were designed by the German architects Mylius and Bluntschi . In 1881 the Viennese council decided to dedicate the centre of the cemetery to 'famous personalities’. These honour graves, as they ... Read review

Viennese Treasure
Review of Hofburg by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Architecture, museums, gardens
Disadvantages: Needs a lot of time to see everything

...course a trip to the Hofburg Imperial Palace was one the main items on our agenda. I planned a day to visit the palace. How misguided could I have been. The Imperial palace in the end took up three days of the holiday alone. It is vast. On my first visit I was astounded and in awe of the magnificent splendour of the exterior of the building and this astonishment was only increased as the opulence of the interior unfolded. Potted History Unlike other ...
...von Erlach in 1729. The Hofburg Palace is a mixture of architectures with examples of Gothic, Baroque, neo-Renaissance styles. The majority of the palace houses a number of splendid collections but The Leopold Wing of Imperial Palaces houses the offices of the Austrian presidency, since it was turned over to this task in 1946. The Gardens I have placed this first in this review as it was our first introduction to the Palace and was a welcome retreat ... Read review
